temp gauge goes up when car is turned off

I just got a 91 camaro. It was heating up when I would be in traffic because the fan would not come on. I replaced the temp. sensor and fan sensor. that problem is fixed. The temp runs around 180 to 190 in traffic, sitting still or going down the road. When I have been driving for a while and turn the car off the temp. gauge will go up to 200,240 sometimes as far as it can go. The coolant is never boiling, no sounds from the radiator. Is the car getting hot or is the gauge messed up?

Re: temp gauge goes up when car is turned off

i think its normal, my iroc goes to 220 when i turn it off and my rs goes almost to 240. as long as ur temp s normal as son as engine starts then youre good.temp gauge is pretty much an electromagnet. the colder the engine the weaker the field as it heats up the resistance to ground drops and increases that fields strength pulling the needle to the higher heat ranges, you turn engine off you cut power to that field so there's nothing to hold that needle down.

Is it a stock gauge, or aftermarket?

Then there's no power when the key is turned off, and you're just watching the needle drift into its rest position. It's perfectly normal.

i was wondering if you could give me a picture of the location and discription on how to remove the temp sensor... i can manually turn on my fan with ac switch... i already replace fan motor relay and fuse... it just wont kick on when the car warms up...

Re: temp gauge goes up when car is turned off

It depends on what engine you have. And I believe the part you need is the cooling fan switch. Problem is the fan won't turn on by itself right? If that is the problem and you have a small block, then I believe it is located in the passenger side head.

Re: temp gauge goes up when car is turned off

If it has A/C it should have dual fans. One is controlled by the ECM, which reads the CTS in the intake, the other is controlled by the A/C switch and/or fan switch in the passenger side head.
