89 IROC Z-28 Cooling Question\Issues

Hey guys, new to the forum. After 10 years of waiting I finally got my hands on another IROC-Z28. I had the engine fully rebuilt, and what I noticed was two plugs going to the passanger side fan. Both however were unplugged. Shortly after I noticed a toggle switch in the glove box which was a direct connection to the fan. Assuming the relay, or Fan switch is bad.. however.. per the books.. the relay seems to be in about 3 different places lol. Its an orginal 350 Tune port Car. I "think" the relay is the one located on the upper right of the radiator.. thou I can't confirm that. Anyone have any ideas? I'm trying to get the car back to the way its supposed to be.. and I don't want to depend on a switch, as it is the way the guy has it hooked up I think is causing issues. Don't really have anyone close by thats into Camaro's so I'm kinda solo up here in Prescott Valley =\ Thank you all ;-)

Edit:
Btw; my car has two fans. Forgot to mention that.

Re: 89 IROC Z-28 Cooling Question\Issues

Yes, according to a few posts I read thou, the 1989 IROC Z-28 5.7 fan relay is right of the radaitor and next to the battery.. I replaced that. I actually I think its 3 Relays along the driver side firewall, and then one on the fender next to them. According to the book I bought, its up their.. but from what I've read here.. my year has the weird spot. Also the fan switch which I thought was between the 6 & 8 plug.. looks different from the one auto zone sold me. So far the car has not went above 230 degrees.. and has been around 220-180.. but not saying the fan is on.. its just cold out, and I live in Northern AZ.. and the outside air temp is doing me favors lol.

Re: 89 IROC Z-28 Cooling Question\Issues

Finally.. got it figured out. thank you guys for the input. On my year (89) their was a green\black wire set for a normal dual fan.. and I guess a black with black & red wires for a heavy duty set. The guy that did the engine rebuild connected the wrong ones to the car.. found this out after replacing the relay (their are two near my battery.. one for the AC and one for the coolent fan switch) the green wire wasn't connected to power, but was grounded.. weird. Anyways connected the proper cables.. tested system.. now the temp doesn't go above 210\215ish.. w00t.

Afterwards.. found my last issue.. not sure how to fix it yet thou.. my dipstick for the oil is pop'ing up due to pressure inside the engine.. and causing it to spray oil a bit. Gonna check my PCV tomorrow and see if I can hear that rattle thing.. praying that's all it is..the engine has about 250 miles on it.. so maybe the rings aren't ... right yet..? -.-

Re: 89 IROC Z-28 Cooling Question\Issues

I'm new here too. Just bought an 89 IROC on Monday. 69K miles. Runs great! Two things I am chasing down though. The factory temp gauge was pegged straight up....someone had installed an after market gauge. I "unstuck" the gauge tonight by taking the gauge bezel and clear plastic off. Hopefully that will fix that issue. The other issue is that the engine will not heat up past 150 degrees or so. This car spent time in AZ so I am thinking the last owner must have put in a cooler (150-160) degree thermostat. Also- as soon as the car hits about that temp both cooling fans come on and stay on. thoughts? I am wondering if the fan temp switch in the passenger side head was also swapped out with a cooler "on temp" switch. The temp sensor looks new so I do think it was replaced. Can you get different temp sensor/switches? My fan wiring is also hacked up. Someone ran new grounds and has messed with the relays near the battery. I guess they are working OK? The fans are not on when the engine is first started. If I turn on the A/C on a cold engine the fans do turn on. If I turn the A/C back off- the fans shut off. This seems right to me- just need to get the temp setting higher.

thanks!
Jason

Re: 89 IROC Z-28 Cooling Question\Issues

Now that I finally have my wiring repaired and back to factory.. if you can e-mail me at Timothy.Kramer@hotmail.com bro. Maybe I can work with you and you can take some pictures. I got my fan running properly, doesn't normally go above 200 degrees, sits around 180-190. Also is yours a 350 or 305? I can try to help ya more once I know exactly what you had.. the guy who owned my hacked some wires too but I was able to trace them down and repair it =)

Lastly, found one of the reasons I had so much engine pressure.. the dude connected both PCV lines up.. one correctly, one incorrectly.. engine wasn't able to vent pressure.. now the car shifts and drives and stomps on Mustangs again =D.. now... to change the fuel filter ( The lines are severarly rusted). =\ damn michigan.. lol.

Re: 89 IROC Z-28 Cooling Question\Issues

Just wondering, Jason. On your dual-fan system, you should have two pigtails going towards the fan. Are you using the green & black ones, or the red\black & black ones? I know that sounds weird. The reason why I ask is one is the heavy duty (Red\black \black) other is standard. I used the heavy duty ones.. and I think I have the wiring sheet downstairs, I could even scan it for you. Its the one from GM so its pretty direct and would be alot eaiser to follow then the ones out of the books you buy from autozone or whatever. And if you do have the IROC 350 Tune Port, you should have the same or very similar set-up as mine so I could walk you thru which relays go where etc.

Re: 89 IROC Z-28 Cooling Question\Issues

I know this an old post but any chance you could post pics of your cooling fan relays up front? I am working on a 1989 IROC 350 with my son and the fan relays are a mess due to some shade tree mechanic in the past. which is the AC relay and which is the cooling fan? Also do you know the part numbers for the relays and pigtails?

Thanks,

Jim
