cooling problem

hey guys. new to this site. i just picked up an 85 TA. LB9. it overheats around town. stay right in the 220 range on the highway.

thermostat is opening. lower hose isn't collapsed. fluid level is ok. air damn is intact. nothing blocking the radiator.

is it safe to assume the fan is the issue (electric fan)? is this a common issue?

Re: cooling problem

Could be the fan or the the coolant temp sensor that tells your fan when to turn on.....

There is one on the block and one by the thermostat. One tells the fan to come on and the other is for your gauge on the dash. I forget what one of the 2 tells the fan to come on. Search: coolant temp sensor whithin this site.

Re: cooling problem

I have changed both of mine but that was a year ago and forget. But I believe one is called the "coolant temp sensor" and the other is called the "coolant temp switch" Try direct wiring your fan to the bat. if it comes on then it should be your sensor........

Re: cooling problem

When sitting in the driveway idling, does the fan come on when you turn on the AC? If so then at least you know the fan and relay are OK

Re: cooling problem

just a replacement fan is fine. rockauto.com might have what you need. if its just the fan motor not the fan you can go to autozone and pick a motor up. also check under your car for the black air scoop for your car

Re: cooling problem

If the fan didn't go on with the AC, the fan may still not be the problem. Could be the relay or wiring. Make sure you test by putting 12 volts to the two motor contacts before you just replace it.
