thermostat bolt snapped. best removal?

So it seemed as if my thermostat was stuck because the water wasn't flowing through very well and the car would get hot at red lights. So I went to remove the hose and the damn bolt snapped. There is about 3/16 of it above the manifold. What would be the best way to remove it? It seemed as if it was cross threaded.

I'd soak it everyday in PB Blaster for a few days, and then maybe try a pair of vise grips on it.

Re: thermostat bolt snapped. best removal?

Lesson number one. Never work on your car anywhere else but home unless you work at a shop.

That being said, heat it with a torch till its cherry and hit it with some penetrating lube this usually draws the lube into the thread area much like if you where sweating pipes at home. Drill it out enough and use a bolt thread extractor. If you don't have any, some locking vise grips may work.

If that doesnt work, drill it out clean and re-thread it with a tap. It looks like it has seen better days maybe a new manifold would be a worth while consideration.

Re: thermostat bolt snapped. best removal?

Yea that was my first thought. Why the hell didn't I wait to check it this weekend. I figured two bolts check the thermostat and if it needed a new one I'd get one Saturday. Instead this crap happened. I will try heating it up with a butane torch and use vise grips. If I can't get it tonight, hopefully our maintenance man will let me borrow the welder for a few seconds and I will attempt to weld a nut on it and see if I can un screw it then. Thanks

Just don't have extra cash at the moment or I probably would. Living on your own has a few set backs ha ha.

Re: thermostat bolt snapped. best removal?

If the original head snapped that nut off you will not be able to weld a nut that will hold on that rust. You will most likely have to drill it out, the treads are most likely trashed on the inside anyway. You will have to re-thread it once you get it out.
