Re: Is this time to replace?
Thanks for answering all three questions that have been bugging me for awhile. I didn't even know that it was unplugged. How do I fix figure out and fix this mess? Especially the coolant leaking problem?

go to autozone and get a new thermostat, thermostat gasket and neck since your looks like its about had it. the unplugged sensor is for your gauge readings

Re: Is this time to replace?
to fix the problem, drain your coolent into a bucket, take off the radator hose, take the two bolts out of the rusty thing and it will come up, inside youll see the thermostat. pull that out and take it to autozone so you can get the right one and get a new gasket aswell. then just reassemble, just remember to take a razor blade and scrap off the old gasket on the neck if you dont replace it and off the block!!

Re: Is this time to replace?
When I bought the car back in August it was like this. Makes me nervous to know that I've been driving around in this condition. This helped out a lot since I knew nothing about this and the Haynes Manual didn't answer my questions. Thanks guys.

its gotta be around there, normally attached to the wires that go to the AC compressor, look at the lomb and you should see a green wire sticking out some where not far from there.

Re: Is this time to replace?
your neck looks fine now that i looked again, just get a new thermostat and gasket. its all under $10 at autozone. just remembed to get the old gasket off and to drain your system before you do this!! put it in a container that you can use to put it back into the radaitor

Re: Is this time to replace?
sounds like a preview owner installed a new one in one of the other holes. and just kept that sensor there to plug it.

Re: Is this time to replace?
That's a much earlier model neck that somebody put on that had different fittings there that your year model doesn't need. Stock one for you is aluminum. That old cast iron one is harder to seal well. You might consider replacing it with one probably easily found at the JY. If you do that, sand down the sealing surface on something flat to fix any slight warpage that may have occured and get a new gasket and you should be good
Your temp gauge sender is on the driver side of the head toward the front

Re: Is this time to replace?
Update: Went to the yards today to look for a newer thermostat neck (see pic above), and the fbodies near my area were pretty much stripped. Does anyone know which store could help? So far Autozone and Pep Boys have turned up... Nothing. Zip.

Re: Is this time to replace?
The stock water outlet is cast chinesium. Total crap.
The one you have is a replacement one, made of cast iron. FAR FAR better than a stock one. Don't replace it, just clean it up and put a new thermostat & gasket on it. Even at that, a brand-new one at the parts store (remember, the official word is "water outlet") is only about $12.
Be prepared for the bolts to be REAL hard to get out, with them being constantly saturated in water like that. Expect them to be corroded in there pretty solid. If one breaks, DON'T try an Ez-Out, those NEVER work, it will break off as well and then you'll have a real mess on your hands. Instead, grind or file the broke-off bolt fragment flat; center-punch it in the exact center with a good, sharp center punch; and drill it out with progressively larger bits, like a 3/32", then a 3/16", then a 5/16". You may be able to remove the remains of it by hand once you get that far. If not, use a Heli-Coil to repair it. Resist the temptation to drill it out really huge and use a larger bolt; that will eventually come back to bite you in the butt. Just do it right.

Re: Is this time to replace?
Sooo I ended up going to Oreilly's auto parts and ended up getting these items. I didn't check the updates messages until tonight. It's not made out of cast iron, but I don't know. Anyways, take a look. Should this be okay? Or just take it back?
