Electronic heater control problems
Electronic heater control problems
I have an 88 TA 305 with an electronic heater/AC control. The motor that moves the hot/cold divider (forgive me for not knowing the proper parts descriptions) in the heater box needs replacing. Its slow when it works and sometimes hangs up about halfway when you slide the hot/cold **** to hot or cold. When you unhook the rod from the motor to the door the door moves freely and doesn't hang up at all so its a tired motor. Is it possible to get a rebuild kit (like the headlight motors) or just replace? Also what is the actual part name and would anybody know where can I buy one to replace? Thanks.

Re: Electronic heater control problems
Zeesta, I've got the same problem with the heater on my 87 GTA. I've looked everwhere for the part. I believe it's called the "blend door actuator" It's unique to cars with the digital dash, according to my local "former" Pontiac dealer. He said the design wasn't even shared with other GM cars. Did you have any luck locating one or rebuilding yours? I understand this a old thread, but I haven't found anyone else with this problem. Thanks for whatever help you can provide, I'll post if I locate one. Does anyone have a part number?
Re: Electronic heater control problems
Hi. finally someone with the same problem,no luck at all locating a part or rebuild kit. I'm bout ready to yank it and crack it open to see if there is any way to repair it. Kinda hate to though, cause you know what can happen when stuff comes apart! but its not useful this way it is. We need ac in the summer (T-Tops and all) and even though we park it in the winter, we still need heat, sometimes lots, sometimes a little. We need our climate control! We haven't enjoyed the car for years now, so now we're at the point where if we cant repair this problem, we're gonna get something we can. I,m a decent wrench but this thing is pissed me off long enough.

Could you put a manual box in if you can't find a replacement?

Re: Electronic heater control problems
I've never seen the digital dash control parts but, I'd imagine they used a servo for the blend door like most all cars use anymore.
I fixed my moms servo on her '00 lesabre with a couple 1/2 watt resistors from radio shack. They (actuating servos) are not very complex inside.
There's no harm in opening it up, what are you going to do, make it unusable ?

Does the part your referring to also move the air from defrost to vent? Mine seems to take awhile to switch between the two

To the OP, I don't see any reason why you can't retrofit a blend door actuator from a newer car to do the job. All cars now use them. You just have to figure out which wires do what function.
