Aluminum Radiator Help

Should I ground my 2 core aluminum radiator? It will be secured in place with rubber radiator bushings top and bottom.

It wouldn't hurt if you did.

What would be the need for a ground?

Re: Aluminum Radiator Help

Without a ground strap if the radiator ever became electrically charged for any reason it would set up a current to ground through the coolant which would cause electrolysis and rapid corrosion.

Re: Aluminum Radiator Help

They say there is a small amount of electrolysis in every cooling system...distilled or de-ionized water should be used and ground the aluminum tank or it will corrode very quickly. Wasn't sure how true that was so I figured I would ask in a thread. Thanks for the info Apeiron.

Re: Aluminum Radiator Help

He is right, electrolysis does occur no matter what you do but distilled water and most additives prevent it. I don't know if a ground would help since the water would be a good ground. A 50/50 antifreeze mixture helps also and raises the boiling point which aids in cooling as long as your cap is good. I have samco hoses on one of my other cars has anyone ever found any for our cars? They last virtually forever and you don't have to worry about them ruptureing.

Re: Aluminum Radiator Help

The impurities in the water is what allows electrical current to flow through it...take out the impurities and you reduce if not completely stop the ability for current to flow through depending on how clean the water is. Luckily we have a DI system at work for rinsing parts so that will be easy to get. I will probably still install a ground just for added protection.
