can i install a toggle switch and bypass relay?
I just bought a 92 RS ive been having issues with it running hot and sometimes over heating. The guy that owned it before me cut the fan wires and twisted in a new wire which he ran to the inside and put it in the fuse box (heater slot). after looking around i noticed the relay was kind of melted. I was wondering if i can install a toggle switch (two prong) to bypass the relay? This is only going to be a temp fix until i get a new relay and fan but i would still like to keep the toggle switch option.

Wire it up one time, correctly.

you CAN run a switch, you just have to make sure you get a switch ment to run on the hot side of a high amp circuit. or you can do it right by just wiring a correct rated relay with a toggle switch wired in parallel on the ground circuit of the relay.

I have a switch that turns on both fans and bypasses everything. You have to ground the green wire at the relay and also the wire going to the compressor to get the other fan. That way one switch gets both fans. GM did it weird in that everything has power and has to be grounded to come on. Actually it makes the wiring a little easier in that you don't have to worry about power supplies and fuses. Just ground a wire and it works. You should get the 2 fan set-up since I hear that it cools much better or buy a fan with a much higher CFM rating.

its not gm that did it that way, thats how most relays work. you dont want the high amps running through the switch. so instead you put the switch on the ground which is low amps. and the OP has a bypassed relay so he cant wire the same way as yours. do you have your switch on there as the only way the fans turn on, or as a way to override the relay and turn them on when you want?

Yes my system is stock and I am just grounding the relay to override the stock system. I was letting him know that it would different than running power to it like most fans, amps, etc. We all know the factory settings are high and a bypass is almost mandatory especially here in Arkansas where it gets Africa hot. I have two extra fans making four total on my vert and they are relay triggered like they should be. I also have a bypass switch for them as well. In Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana and all the other southern states these cars overheat extremely easy. I have a be-cool radiator, 4 fans, new heater core, distilled water and purple ice and a custom air dam made from aluminum that almost drags the ground and my car still runs warm.

if you have all that and your car is still getting hot, you have a bigger issue. i live in texas, had my single 2100cfm fan running on a alum 3 row radiator and the temp gauge barely hit 200. that was in triple digit humid heat. and my temp gauge is an autometer ultralightII, so no worries about it being inaccurate.

If he re wired the fan, you may double check and make sure it is blowing/sucking the air in the correct direction. Direction of the fan can be changed by swapping the positive and negative.

If a power draw is 20A and you have the + side connected, the 20A point of contact is at the ground.
It still draws 20A if you try and reverse the way you connect the order of polarity.
