electric cooling system setup
so over the winter i wanna convert my cooling system to an electric water pump and electric fans. i just want to know how reliable electric water pumps are and what i should be looking for with electric fans. i know they dont work right without a shroud and i would put stock ones in but i cant seem to track any down the car is an 85 with a mild 355 and it already runs pretty cool.

Re: electric cooling system setup
as long as you use a high quality electric water pump
and not chinese junk and the wiring is sound, the
electric water pump should as reliable as any other
electric motor in the car-fuel pump,heater blower,ETC
Biggest problem with electric water pump is the motor
is only around 1/10hp,possibly 1/8hp for a powerful one
-plenty for idle and town driving, but may not be enough
for highway use(stock belt driven pump is about 1/15
hp at idle, about 1 1/2 hp at 3000rpm,5 hp or more at
high rpm)Some on here have reported that the electric
water pump they were using did provide enough flow
to cool ok at highway speed though-just have to try it
and see if it cools at speed
Lots of options for the fan(s)-salvaged OEM fans are
usually a much better value than aftermarket fans
-just make sure the wiring and control method is
sound and there should be no problems.

Re: electric cooling system setup
what's the reasoning behind switching to an electric pump? the mechanical ones on these cars are pretty cheap and reliable. unless you're trying to pull out every last bit of horsepower from a fully tuned motor, its not going to gain you much on a street car. not to mention a quality unit is going to be very expensive

Re: electric cooling system setup
CONS:
-Quality units are expensive.^
-Mounts and brackets have to removed or changed when adding the electric pump adding to cost.
-More wire clutter, have to mess with wiring up relays ect.
-When the pump goes it just stops working completely, maybe leaving you stranded?
-More load on the alternator, slightly diminishing any gains.
PROS:
-Cleaner look
-on a stock motor, hp will increase 5-8
-At the track it helps to cycle cool water through the system without starting the car.
Im sure there are other things I missed, but in my opinion. 300$ for a quality unit, plus another handful of cash to re-route belts and new brakets. I feel you can spend less money on something else to gain some power, If that is what you are going for.

Re: electric cooling system setup
those are some good points on the electric pump. i was just thinking about it to free up some horsepower but it doesnt really seem to be worth it for my application in light of this info. i do still want to do an electric fan tho. as far as the stock ones go (because thats what i would prefer to use just for ease of install and costs sake) do i need the shroud to go with it and where would i be able to get my hands on a set. also can anyone recommend a controller for that?

Stock single electric fan from early Iroc. Flows more than enough or....
Ford Taurus fans...
Both awesome, I use mine with a Painless Fan-Thom II thermostatic relay kit.

Re: electric cooling system setup
Meziere makes electric water pumps. I was looking into one but can't justify the price. I think the biggest advantage for me would be the look of it over a conventional water pump.
