Using the hood for cooling
On my stock 88 hood i have vents on the top of it towards the front of the hood, i was wondering if any one has ever cut holes on the underside of the hood to allow the air to go through the hood and into the engine compartment.

Re: Using the hood for cooling
I've seen some cars doin the opposite... have a reverse scoop on the hood to extract heat from the engine bay. Sorta like wrx sti in rally racing. Hot air from the rad gets blown out the hood by the fans. Also some cars have extraction points on the hood itself to allow air to escape.

I beleave its called a "cowl" strip of weatherstripping that runs between the rear of the hood and the body just before the bottom of the window that some have remove to allow the hot air to escape .Ive done it and have had no adverse effects.

Yea, my car never sees rain, Its just my DD. I will admit that our winters here in Sonoma ,CA aren't that bad but we do have our share of rain. Ive never had any problems with my fire wall being wet or water on any critical parts because of the cowl weatherstripping being removed.

Re: Using the hood for cooling
I pulled the cowl weatherstrip off every 3rd gen I've ever had (on #6 now) & not once had a problem from the rain & every one has been a daily driver, rain or shine.
As for those vents being opened, I have seen it done but never heard anything about the positive or negative effects after doing it.

Removing the cowl seal is fine in warmer states but us northern peeps have to worry about the seal letting heat out and foging the window up in cooler weather.
Removing the block off plate on a formula will cause that also.
Remove the seal also for top speed runs, It helps let out built up pressure under the hood at speed.

And how many people, regardless of what part of the country they live in, have fiberglass hoods? How many of those put the rubber cowl strip on? Less than 1% is my prediction. So I wouldn't worry about it. Lots of talk yet I have never heard a complaint about water getting in because of the lack of the rubber strip.
