Added Intercooler - worried about air movement with current air dam

I just installed a procharger with a intercooler, this intercooler takes up alot of the open space under the front nose cone that was once there. While air will still move through the intercooler to the radiator (due in part to the scoop that mounts to the intercooler to help pull air through, it is still an obstruction. I also added a transmission cooler that I mounted in front of the condensor (yes I still have my A/C). I do have a 4 core BeCool radiator also with two flex-o-lite electric fans that pull 2500CFM.

The air dam that I currently have is the original one piece, that is pretty weak and disstored. I have been looking to see what else is available and have come across guys that are running the 3-piece air dams, I would assume the 3-piece will bolt up the same as my 1-piece dam that I currently have?

The car ran warm on a summer day 205-215, before all of this, so I'm looking to do as much as I can to help it run cooler. Looking to get into the high to mid 11's at the track.

Re: Added Intercooler - worried about air movement with current air dam

Cant really tell by the pics how your intercooler is mounted but these cars are suppose to be bottom breathers, meaning they dont require air to pass thru the front of the nose to then go into the rad. It is suppose to come up from the air dam and then into the rad by the fans.

I assume this is like most procharger kits where the intercooler is laid horizontal across that factory air dam portion? If so then yes it can cause slight restriction and possibly cut off some flow to the rad. Only way to tell is to test it and see.

Yes the intercooler is laid horizontal, I guess what I'm looking for is some clarification on the 3-piece air dam compared to the 1-piece that I have now. I'm just curious if the 3-piece will work in place of the 1-piece and that everything will bolt up as far as the 3-piece dam is concerned.

When I put my intercooler there on my '91, my car ran hot on the highway. I moved the intercooler up between the bumper and the radiator and didn't have any problems after that.

Re: Added Intercooler - worried about air movement with current air dam

Can anyone comfirm a 3-piece dam will work on my car instead of a one piece dam? I think i will get better cooling from the 3 piece dam. Anyone?

"direct fit" for the aero package. Anything can work, just might take some fabrication.

Great, thanks. I ordered the 3-piece air dam yesterday. I figured one way or another I would get it to work.

Unless your car didn't originally have the gfx (guess it did, judging by screenname), the car should have the 3pc factory.

Regardless, the 3 piece is no more effective then the single (came on formula/base, similar to the camaro). The piece that attaches to the underside of the fender gfx are more for decoration than anything.

Re: Added Intercooler - worried about air movement with current air dam

Car came with a one piece air dam. See attached picture, notice the distortion, which to me is allowing air to flow by the dam.

Re: Added Intercooler - worried about air movement with current air dam

The air dam creates turbulance in the airflow by pulling air "up", creating a high pressure area in front of the dam. The air is then pulled through by the low pressure area that's created by the air dam behind the radiator area. As long as your intercooler doesn't interfere with the airdam and the flow of air "up", you won't have any issues.
