A/C Compressor Replacement Tips & Tricks

So my a/c was recharged and all the refrigerant leaked out within a month....I figured the compressor was leaking so I had the shop put dye in it and sure enough i was seeing bubbling green liquid coming from two hairline cracks on the back of my compressor along with a hissing noise. So I bought a new compressor and will attempt to replace it myself tomorrow....I am moderately mechanically inclined so if anyone has any tips/warnings before I do this please let me know! All I have to go on is brief Autozone instructions and a Haynes manual. Thanks a lot.

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement Tips & Tricks

Good luck, you should be able to do it with the manual and the ! Also change the dryer/accumulator and orifice tube and use the right oil. Look at the stickies about this. Pull or have someone pull a vacuum on it to make sure that it is Ok and then jumper the low pressure switch on the dryer/ accumulator when you go to fill it. This is also the time when you may want to switch to R134R. (Read all of the stickies as eveyone has an opinion on what you need to recharge it with) I have R134A and it cools...OK. As I said, Good Luck!

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement Tips & Tricks

It should be pretty straight forward. un bolt compressor and lines, bolt is new compressor. My car as been retrofitted with 134 as well but the compressor is making a little noise and a slow leak out of the back of the compressor so I am debating swapping out mine too

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement Tips & Tricks

I have a 1991 Z28 305 Auto.

Oreilly Auto Parts has the compressor for $129.99 Well anyways my compressor has the death rattle and finally hit the dust and was locking up on me... When I went to check the low side it was fully charged. So I put the High side on and the dam fitting came off the hose. So I tried to put the fitting back on but the threads were all gone. So this house now needs to be changed. Well no one knows the part number or knows how to get it or where.

I tried the following:
Oreilly's
Autozone
Napa
Pepboys
Casco
Carquest
Advance Autoparts
4 Seasons
Discount Ape Auto Parts
Chevy Dealership (They said it was discontinued and they didn't even have a dam part number. Called two places and ended up with the same answer.)
classicindustries.com
ebay.com
Pick&Pull They had one but the car it was on had a hole in the line from rubbing on the car's chassis.

I'm lost where to find this stupid High Pressure hose that goes from the Evaportor coil to my Condenser coil. On this steel line it has my high pressure port along with a pressure sensor on the high side. I can find the hose that goes to my compressor every where but not the other.

FYI it was 107 (that's not the heat index either) today when it went out and it's almost impossible to handle that kind of heat in traffic (rest of the week it's supposed to be over 100). Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement Tips & Tricks

Here's another pic when it's still in the car hooked up.
It's the bottom compression fitting.

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement Tips & Tricks

Here it the aluminum house out of the car. I tried to re-thread it with a tap and die but didn't have luck because the OD was smaller than the fitting for R134a...

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement Tips & Tricks

Here's a guy on this board selling a complete setup
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/nw-i...omplete-c.html

And this one sells what appears to be whatever parts you need on this board

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Virtu...02207606487557

Look through the classifieds on this board and I'm sure you'll find what you are looking for.
Good luck!

@86T/A_Ram_Air
Tired Rockauto.com and they didn't have the part either... Going to pm the person.

@Richboll
The facebook link is a dead link... But the other one I couldn't have said any better timing on needed the parts. I sent him a message to see hopefully he still has the hose I need.

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement Tips & Tricks

Found an guy that works at Ape Discount Auto Care that made ac hoses on the side and was able to make a high pressure line out of rubber for me. Seems to work fine tho I did put dye into it just in case I find another leak else where in the system. What's odd it when I had to replace the other suction and discharge line that comes off the compressor. The hose was much thinner wall. When I performed an draw down to boil off everything in the system the hose collapsed on it's self. The old R12 line was stiff and didn't have that problem... The new line tho says R134a so I'm unsure if it's really a cheap replacement or that's what the new R134a line are supposed to do...

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement Tips & Tricks

FYI does anyone have the specs on R134a pressures?

I put exactly 90% capacity (sticker said 2.25lbs factory) and low was 38 and high is 215 at outside temp 93 and temp coming out of vent at idle 57.

FYI the cost of the custom high pressure line hose was $38 with all the fittings...

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement Tips & Tricks

I have read a few of these threads, my problem is that the hose bracket on the back of the compressor has one bolt holding it all in, and it is leaking on the outer edge. I put in new gaskets and tightened everything down but I am wondering if I tightened it to much or did not clean it well enough or do I just have a warped surface because I can not keep any pressure in the system for more than a few days. I used UV dye and can clearly see the spot and it is between the aluminum hose surface and the compressor. Any Ideas

machine the surface flat? I would only take off what you need to make it flat ,as well, it may bend again
