Coolant temp sensor and guage need help!!!!!!!

Well I've replaced my engine with a sbc 400, have a jegs rad and dual fans, guage says its a 220, check it with a heat gun says 170 on block, head and pump. I've replaced the sensor with Borg Warner from Oreillys. Can anyone help steer me in the right direction? I don't want aftermarket guages? Thanks

The factory gauge sucks. About the best you can do is add series resistance to the line to get it to normal.

the resistance unit is built into the gauge itself .sometimes you can repair your own with parts from radio shack ect.

Yes, I converted from tpi to carb, I placed the sensor on the passenger side head. The guage also read wrong so I placed it on the driver side head it read correctly for a bit then, it went to poo.

Re: Coolant temp sensor and guage need help!!!!!!!

OK so now you know that when the "gauge" (I use the word loosely; it's really an "appearance" or "trim" package) reads whatever you said it reads, it means, "normal".

What difference does the "number" that the trim package points to make? All you need to know is, is it DIFFERENT FROM "NORMAL". If it's "normal", then all is well, even if "normal" is with the "gauge" pointing to 300. If it's something other than "normal", ,,,, ..... ,, well, you do the math.

As suggested, it sounds like you're messing with the wrong sensor. THe one that works the gauge is in the driver's side head between the #1 & #3 spark plugs.

Re: Coolant temp sensor and guage need help!!!!!!!

Coolant temperature is too high
What IS the temperature, REALLY?

cooling fans don't turn on when cooling temperature is too high
What temp are you expecting it to turn on at?

THe factory setup is for the fan to come on at around 235° and off at around 210°. If the rest of the cooling system is working properly, the car will sit and idle in 115° heat with the A/C on, with no trouble of any kind. If your fan turns on & off at those temps, then your problem lies elsewhere (if you even have a problem at all).

That's ok then but i noticed one unpleasant thing...When my car is up to normal level of warm suddenly power of engine reduces...But first hour or more it's very powerful but then unexpectedly it loses all agility and sensitivity.
