5.7 running hot at 230*
Got back on the road yesterday, and damn...what a beast my 4 month project has turned into. It does seem to be running hot even after buying a new radiator. It is a rebuilt 78 Sbc 350 with comp cam, edelbrock carb and intake, so not a whole lot. I had to reroute my serpentine setup and bought a new ccw Waterpump...thinking that could be the culprit. And suggestions? Thermostat is 180*.

With a 180 stat and fan running all the time it should stay cooler than that. Possible air in the line or underpowered fan. Did you bleed the air out when you filled the antifreeze? What is your antifreeze temperature set at? I'm no expert but these things are low lying fruit.

Re: 5.7 running hot at 230*
Fan is working ans may be under powered but even when rolling at 60 mph it doesn't make a difference. I have bled the cooling system more than once just to make sure. Is there the chance that my block may be less efficient with coolant flow with a ccw waterpump? And I know for a fact 100% it is ccw.

Got my alternator on top left, power steering on right. The belt its routed in a "v" shaped with the flat side going underneath the Waterpump pully. I am missing an air damn.

Most likely your problem, especially if hot at speed.

Re: 5.7 running hot at 230*
Do yo have a single fan or dual fans?
If you have all your ducks in a row check for a weak fan motor or a alt thats low on amps. I think dual fan cars use a 105 amp.
also do u have underdrives or stock pullys?
It doesn't matter to the motor which way your pump spins but it does matter how you route the belt for the pump you use.
Like I said it doesnt matter but It sounds like you should be using a standard rotation pump with the accessory drive you have. Could you post a pic of it so we can see what you have going on?

Thanks for jumping in TTop, I was starting to get in over my head. Still think the airdam at speed is a problem and guessing an underpowered fan at idle, assuming he has his belt run correctly.

here's a few photos of my setup. it's single fan, considering getting dual..if anything it'd help but I doubt it will keep it cool enough.

Re: 5.7 running hot at 230*
I'll let TTop help you with it since he has more knowledge than me but I have never seen a water pump with so little belt contact. Wouldn't surprise me if it's slipping. And shouldn't you have a belt tensioner in there?

That is true, not much contact but the belt its tight enough. There is no slippage when pushing the throttle. I have not been able to put a tensionor on it. That's on the to do list. Thanks or all your recommendations so far bud.

No problem. Wish I could have helped more. And I would do the air dam as soon as possible. Some people make their own. You could do a search on it to see how.

Re: 5.7 running hot at 230*
Ccw water pump is correct for that belt setup.
Get a full shroud around that fan. There's little airflow across the core that's not covered by the fan, so you're really only using about half of your rad. Plus it's probably recirculating some hot air around the sides, rather than drawing 100% thru the core.
Or go dual fans, but same thing applies with the shroud.

It should be ok the way its setup, not the best but should work ok.
Have you checked your timing and if the car is running lean or not?

Re: 5.7 running hot at 230*
The timing is set at 12*. About as close as I can get to without it pinging to be safe. Everything is dead on except for the temp. I will be getting dual fans from a buddy later today and let you guys know how that helps out. Another thing that came to mind...since I put in a 78 appropriate temperature sensor...would that be giving a faulty reading with the 92's temp gauge? Thank you all for the suggestions so far! So stoked to be a third gen owner!

That might have a different reading than our stock ones? I'm not 100% sure.
Have you run a temp laser on your parts to check the "real" temps?? These senders and gauges are not always the best..

Made my own shroud to see if it would make a difference, and it has had much of an affect. Will be purchasing dual fans this evening. Hopefully will be able to fab an air damn also.
