Air Damns

I spent a lot of the summer getting my AC to work. It's working now but the car over heats while using the AC. In fact on a really hot day it may overheat with the AC off, especially while sitting at a stop light or driving in heavy traffic.

The main fan was only working sometimes, so I replaced the fan motor and it helped but I still can't use the AC on extremely hot days, days when I need it the most.

I was at my friends shop and he had another 3rd gen camaro on the lift and I noticed he had 2 air dams. My cars seems to missing the one that attaches to the front spoiler. I read a sticky that mentioned this part number but only for the Trans-AM. Does anyone know the Part Number for an 89 camaro.

I also saw that the other car had somehow managed to adapt a 4th gen dual fans and shrouds to fit in his 3rd gen camaro.

Thanks for reading and any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Air Damns

Ya gotta have that, otherwise the car will overheat on the highway.

The factory ones are too rigid; they scrape everything and get broke off.

Best plan is to take something flexible like a 18-wheeler mud flap, cut a strip off of it, and fasten it under the radiator core support with a piece or 2 of aluminum angle, using the bolt holes for the factory piece.

Conveyer belting works great, and is plenty flexible for curb tickling.

Re: Air Damns

I'm not sure we're talking about the same air dam. I have the one that is a straight piece of plastic that deflects the air up onto the radiator. I'm talking about the curved piece (almost a semi-circle) that attaches in front and above the other one and is connected to the front spoiler.

I attached a crude drawing but maybe it will help to explain what I'm after. The larger of the 3 is supposed to be the radiator and that last piece is the deflector dam for a better name. I'm after the the front curved piece. I'm not sure what it's called or the part number.

There is a sticking in this section that has part numbers but only for the "Trans Am, we have no grille. 80% of the cooling comes from underneath the car. The critical piece is the plastic piece that attaches to the radiator and diverts airflow into the radiator. This is called a Center Air Panel Deflector, GM P/N 10020322, $ 29.14. This piece is critical for proper airflow, as is the spoiler strip that attaches to it and runs the width of the car called Radiator Lower Air Deflector, GM P/N 10017673, $ 23.05."

I've seen the part I'm looking on a camaro so there are parts made for the camaro.

Thanks again

Re: Air Damns

They were thinking about the dam that attaches under the rad support.
With your pic I will guess you are looking for the " air scoop " { IDK its propper name either} that moves air into the rad face.

Try

Kurfbird

Re: Air Damns

Where would i find a baffle in Pic 2. I've looked in local So. Cal junk yards but 4rd gen Camaros are quite rare in junk yards and the ones you do find are picked to death.

Thanks James I didn't read your thread far enough. I now have the P/N just hope they're still available.

You don't really "need" that part. If the car in your pic is yours you may need a new lower air dam tho, that thing is bent back bad.

Re: Air Damns

it wasn't mine. There not expensive, or they weren't expensive. Trying to find one is the problem. I'm planning on replacing the fans and shrouds with ones from an LS1 Camaro as their shroud covers the whole radiator and does a much better job of cooling down the motor. It will take a little trimming of the stock top mounting bracket.

Re: Air Damns

No real reason to use the LT/LS setup when the stock fans work fine, just make sure your motors are not worn out and they spin fast like they should.
Also make sure they are working at the correct temp for your t-stat temp.

Re: Air Damns

I've been looking for this piece for a month as well. part # 14107379. I think it's extinct. Check with a member with the name '86 Sport Coupe, he says he has one from a 91 RS, it's not perfect though. I need a near new one, so no help to me. Good Luck

Re: Air Damns

Junk Yard will be your best bet finding that piece.

I call it the Bernoulli shroud. This piece compliments the air dam, however if your car is only overheating while sitting still, this piece will be of no benefit to you.
