Help! 1990 Camaro RS 305 TBI Running hot
I am at my wits end, I have changed everything you can think of and my baby still runs hot when I turn on the AC unless I'm running 55 or more down the highway. What am I missing?
Re: Help! 1990 Camaro RS 305 TBI Running hot
I know your pain, I just went thru it and my pocket still hurts. Maybe I can shine some light into your solution. You mentioned that you have changed everything; what do you mean by that?

Re: Help! 1990 Camaro RS 305 TBI Running hot
I mean everything from new radiator, fan, water pump, tstat, all new hoses, the only thing I haven't changed is the heater core but that is working fine. I'm not loosing coolant any where, but you can not run the AC in town without it running hot. I so don't want to give up on her, my first car was a 79 Z28 I loved her, now that all kids are grown and gone and I don't have to worry about hauling the neighbor hood around, ( I did love my Durango ) I fell in love with the 90's model and promised myself when kids were gone that's what I would be in. I did have the cat checked and it's fine, but she is running rich, she does have new plugs and wires, new oil, fuel filter, fuel pump, and I'm putting a new O2 in her today.

Okay, so she will sit and idle even after running all day and never get hot till you turn on the AC. I'm good with that, however it's really starting to get hot here in Texas.

An update, the O2 sen has helped a lot with her running rich, I don't smell the exhaust like I did before.

Get an infrared thermometer and check the temp at the thermostat. If you're not losing coolant and it's not boiling over it may be that your gauge is off.

Re: Help! 1990 Camaro RS 305 TBI Running hot
when you replaced rad n stuff, did you burp the system?
are you running straight AF or 50/50 ?
yes do check with IR temp scan, your gauges dont always tell the truth.
on my 92 RS, i use 160 stat during summer time, and run AC im lucky if it htis 220
then during winter time i use 195* stat..

As others have suggested, find an alternate method of getting the temperature other than the gauge. The gauge in my '87 pickup says I am running at 230, when reality is 200 on a hot day.
Also, do you have the lower air dam in place. I know that doesn't help when sitting at a stoplight, but it is an important piece of the cooling system that is often missing on our cars.

Re: Help! 1990 Camaro RS 305 TBI Running hot
This is the factory operating temp of the car. You're fine.
You can install a 180 degree thermostat. Lower fan temp switch (225 degree is when the fans turn on from the factory. Get a 195 degree on switch with the 180 degree thermostat.
Beyond that, about the only upgrade is to a TPI dual fan or...jump right to an LS dual fan upgrade which is just about the best upgrade you can do for the cooling system for the car.
