Broken LT1 water pump bolt

So today has been hell. Ive broken the 4" bolt on the waterpump I knew it was going to break when I felt how hard it was to turn them. I've tried welding a nut to it but it just broke right off, then I tried drilling and using a step out. Well let's just say that was a very bad idea, the step out instantly broke and now I can't drill threw the hard material the step outs made of. I've tried heating the bolt up, vice grips, everything! Does anyone have a idea what I can do before I have to bring it to a machine shop?

I used these to take out a waterneck bolt that the head broke off.Tap with a hammer, add socket and ratchet to it, and turn. Lube up with PB Blaster first. Couldn't believe it. IT WORKS! Only if you have 1/2" of threads sticking out

Re: Broken LT1 water pump bolt

Thanks for your response. Ill have to give it a try. Only bad thing is I have about a little less than a half inch sticking out and its very stripped up from using vice grips to turn it

I think 1/4" is all you need. it grips as soon as you stat ratcheting it out. The harder you try, the more it bites into the stud. It's a really beefy set. I thought for sure I was gonna break the tool, but it kept biting and turned the stud right out. Just soak it good for a while.

Re: Broken LT1 water pump bolt

put the vise grips away and put a pipe wrench on it... get it nice and hot, then use the pipe wrench to put even pressure on it- don't jerk it at all or hit it with a hammer or anything.. if it won't budge, then get it nice and hot and quench the bolt with a real penetrating oil (i like PB Blaster, myself) and not WD40 because that stuff is useless for anything more severe than a speaking bedroom door hinge.. then put the pipe wrench on it as soon as you can and spin that thing out... it works on exhaust manifold studs that have been together for 40+ years so a 20 year old water pump bolt will be nothing..

Re: Broken LT1 water pump bolt

Here's why you soak the bolt with PB Blaster as suggested.
Spray it a few times and let do its job, even over night would be good.

Re: Broken LT1 water pump bolt

the heat- even from a propane torch- makes the PB wick into the threads immediately instead of waiting over night... i know when i'm fixing something, i prefer to get it done and not have to wait hours if i don't need to..

one detail that i left out of my last post: keep the heat in the surrounding metal as much as you can- you are trying to get it to expand away from the bolt and break the bond. also, keep the pipe wrench as tight up against the surface of the block as you can to keep the torque from just twisting the bolt off.

I guess if he can weld on it he can use a torch also.
