Cooling Discuss all of the aspects of cooling that you can think of! Radiators, transmissions, electric fans, etc.

Interesting question....

Interesting question....

If I use an aftermarket temp switch let's say that turns the fans on at 185* and off at 170* that accepts the factory connector for discussion purposes and an aftermarket fan that I can also mate with the factory wiring, will the fan come on and off at those temperatures? Also by doing so I won't have to have an aftermarket relay and wiring kit, will I?

Re: Interesting question....

If the car came with a single fan and you are replacing that fan with an aftermarket fan, as long as the new fan is not a lot larger and pulling a lot more amperage than yes. You can use the stock relay and wiring configuration.

If the fan is to large/pulling to much amperage it will blow fuses and worst-case scenario would fry wiring and the relay. The stock wiring and relay are not up to the task.

You can do that and the fan will come on and off at the new fan switch settings.

You "MUST" install a 180* thermostat to make that work.
The fan will cool the radiator but the thermostat controls the temperature of the coolant flowing through the engine block.
They work together.

I have family in Fredericksburg VA.
Absolutely beautiful country. I miss it......

Re: Interesting question....

I'll have to call them to find out what amperage the fan draws, not sure what the factory amp draw is either, I can't see more that 30 or so. Yes it is an OEM single fan in the vehicle. The fan is a 16" and the OEM is 12" I believe. I have a 170* thermostat I was going to put in from GM, do you think that would be ok?

Re: Interesting question....

for those temp specs, you'd need to be running a 160 degree thermostat to keep the fan from running all the time while the engine is running at operating temp... a 180 would be right in the "on" range.

i'd suggest a 190 degree thermostat with a switch that comes on at 210 and shuts off at 200... NAPA has the switch for like $15, i'm running it in my car.

Re: Interesting question....

I actually have a 170* thermostat ready to install due to the temps regulated by the switch. I didn't know parts stores had anything other than stock temp ratings.
