Fixing cooling fan issue.

Hello guys, I was needing some help with the cooling fan on my 92 rs 3.1L that i brought not to long ago. Anyways the PO has the cooling fan hooked up to an toggle switch on the dash to run the cooling fan. I was wanting to put it back to the way the factory had it.
We checked the wiring from the relay to the the fan by jumping over the wires and when we did the fans worked. So i went to autozone and picked up another relay, but the fan did not came on after the new relay was put it.
What else should I check on it. I have the cooling fan diagram printed out from mitchell.

There’s no telling from here what the PO tampered with.

Use your diagram to trace each cooling system wire to make sure it begins and terminates where it should.

Happy Racing !

Re: Fixing cooling fan issue.

Lots of people rig their fans to work this way because of a failure in the fan switch function. When activated it provides a ground to trip the relay. If everything is back to stock, removing the wire from the fan switch and grounding it with the key on should turn on the fan. If that works, but it won't turn on when temps reach 223 degrees or so, your fan switch is at fault.
It's highly likely the PO used the green with white stripe wire that should go to the fan switch to ground via the toggle switch. If so it needs to now go back to the fan switch providing you want to stay stock

Re: Fixing cooling fan issue.

No, the PO hooked one wire into the power wire going into the cooling fan (the red or red/black wire, can not remember right off hand). The other wire is hooked up to the fuse block.
We tried jumping the wires on the plug side of the temp sensor but that did not kick the fan on. Jumping the Relay plug wire will kick on the cooling fan, which is why i replaced the relay thinking it was an bad relay, but that did not help either.
I would like to fix it cuz the engine need gets up to op. temp if i keep the fan on.

Re: Fixing cooling fan issue.

The '92 3.1 v6 did not have a fan switch (which closes at 238°F for ALL years to run the fan if you have one).

so the 92 3.1 don't have fan switch on the lower right side of the engine block, did not know that.

Re: Fixing cooling fan issue.

The ECM controlled fan (for all) turns the (primary) fan on around 220°F, but yes, no fan switch for 92 v6. It was a redundant fan control for the 2.8 though.

Re: Fixing cooling fan issue.

I guess that's why it was not there when we was looking for it. I guess I will try the troubleshooting steps on my day off, hopefully find something

Re: Fixing cooling fan issue.

If the fan relay wiring was not butchered, just bypassed with the toggle, and you think it is wired right, the engine will have to get to/past 220° for the ECM to switch the relay to run the fan. Otherwise, the fan is just decoration, unless your A/C works. Also, keep in mind the gauge may no longer be accurate so, your engine may not quite be at the temperature indicated (cooler).

Jumping the AB terminals of the ALDL to flash trouble codes should make the fan kick on, if all is wired correctly.

Or, while the engine is running, unplug the A/C fan pressure switch. This will tell the ECM the A/C is 'on' and the fan needs to run. (picture here.. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/cool...ml#post5886885)

Re: Fixing cooling fan issue.

ok thanks for the reply, I will check both of them out on my day off (monday).
if I can not get it fixed back the way it was from factory, I might try to just hook up the toggle switch to ground the relay instead of having a power wire running from the left side firewall all the way over to around near the ac lines.

Re: Fixing cooling fan issue.

I spoke with my father this morning about the fan and he told me he did try unhooking the fan pressure switch but that did not kick the fan on. have not tried the trouble code one yet.

Re: Fixing cooling fan issue.

Was working on the cooling issue this morning, and yes the fan does comes on when i ground the pins for the trouble codes. I also found that the dark blue wire that went to ground was not hooked up. But after hooking that back up, it did not work, so must be something else wrong as well
