AC Help Smell

89 GTA (converted to new A/C)

My A/C worked had worked very well (no issues prior)

Recently had to disconnect one of the A/C lines, I vacuumed and recharged the system, now it smells musty after running it after 10 mins or so.

What is now causing the smell?

Did I not vacum the system long enough, could there still be moisture in there, i also noticed alot more condensation on the Dryer now, since having done this.

Could my dryer not be good any more, maybe my evaporator is no good now.

Any thoughts?

Re: AC Help Smell

Vacuum pulled on the system, and the dryer, are both in the sealed refrigerant portion of the a/c system. Any moisture in that part of the system would not impart a musty smell to the incoming air.

There are kits/products for eliminating the growth of mold in the HVAC box, and on the evaporator core, the most common cause of these types of odors. A plugged/restricted drain for the HVAC box can make this problem worse, and if your system is now working and the drain is plugged, it could result in a "new" issue (smell).

Re: AC Help Smell

When was the last time that you actually used the AC?? A lot of times, a musty smell (like DynoDave pointed out) is due to mold build up on the evaporator from over time and if this is the first time you ran the AC it will most likely give you a musty smell. I have seen where spraying Lysol through a straw onto the evaporator with the heat on as high as possible for about 10 minutes, it can get rid of most of that mold and moldy/musty smell. I did that at Dodge for a long time and had good luck with it. But Dodge also had a pinhole for a straw to be put through and aimed at the evaporator.

Re: AC Help Smell

i disconnected the evaporator, in Oct. for 2 days (covered the holes with rubberbands and plastic) connected everything back together, but did not recharge the a/c until a few weeks ago, this year.

I bet your right, from it sitting the evaporator got moldy.

Think the rest of the ac lines might be moldy now as well

Re: AC Help Smell
