help me with the infamous rear gas smell problem i have

Okay here it is, the rear driver side smells of gas really bad, with the windows down, and is more apparent when it's hot outside. I called GM and they said there was no fuel filler neck recall for my 91 Z is this right ? The car is completly tuned (plugs, wires, filters, oxy sensor, the works and runs in near perfect condition) Could it be my Coolant temp sesor, or maybe somthing else, is it the A.I.R ? im not really sure what the A.I.R does, or where its located, how can i tell if it's broken ? Is there anything else i could try ??

I'd check the gas cap and the filler neck to the gas tank, and definitely check the evaporative emissions system (the black canister), particularly, check the vacuum tubing for cracks or being dislodged and check the canister itself for leaks. Rule out the AIR pump because it more than likely has nothing to do with your problem, unless you're running rich, the cats are gone, and the AIR is disabled. Hope this helps.

If it's at the driver's side rear, it's probably the filler neck, or one of the lines that goes to the tank.

Try getting up under the car and looking. It's usually real obvious where the problem is.

I have the exact same problem with my 91, and the dealership says there's no recall on mine either. Did you know that over 1/3 of the camaros made that year had leaks from the filler neck? Yet it appears that ours don't have the recall for some reason. That's BS if you ask me.
I wish there was something we could do. Maybe if we all rally together they'll do something about it. Not likely though.

I had the same problem with my 87 IROC,
it was way worse in the summer, and I live in the desert, thought I would try a new gas
cap first, gas smell was gone, no problem since. I would try this first, they are cheap
and does not hurt to replace.

I have already replaced the carbon canister, and the gas cap, although i replaced the cats last summer, both stock were bad, and the new ones went bad after a few months, both of them, so they were replaced free because of warranty. But they were broken up inside so i dont believe the issue is related, but could it be the A.I.R ? can sombody explain the A.I.R what it does, and how to tell if it's bad ???

I have the problem in the summertime only. I've found that if I turn the key for the locking gas cap and tighten it a little more then I don't have the problem anymore. During the winter this has never been a problem, I guess because the plastic gas cap shrinks just enough in size so that it seats better.

Try it sometime and see if that fixes your problem. . .after all, it's free

Fill the tank completely, and I mean top it of realy all the way,and shine with a flashlight along the fillerneck,if it's wet you know what it is,welcome to the club!!!!!

Last year GM consumers asistance(in Canada,b.t.w.)told me the recal was for '89-92 models......
Since I live in the Netherlands, there's nothing I can do,we have different lawes about this, but maybe if you Americans can get together on this design mistake,GM will reconsider the recal, who knowes?
It is a VERY dangerous situation, don't underestimate it,a car with a leaking fuel tank burns fast!!

Bad cats, burned out another set? Does it only smell when the car has been run? It sounds like you might just be running really rich. A friend of mine was told me that if you were running really rich (Lotsa gas, not getting burned) you could end up destroying the cats, and with 2 sets bad...sounds like it *could* be the problem.
Any SES codes? I'd double chekc that new 02 sensor.

Visit http://www.alldata.com , you'll find the recall information there. Did you give the dealer your VIN #, or did he just say "91? No, there's no recall!" If he did, he's full of it. At Alldata.com, you can give him the recall # and make him look it up!
