air con removal
I want to remove the air con from my 84 lg4 firebird. has anyone else done this on the same/similar model and what are the steps involved?
Or can you point me in the direction of a thread where someone else has done this with instructions?
Where i live i'll need it about two weeks of the year and it's difficult to do any work on the engine with it
thanks guys

Re: air con removal
I've done it on an 89, and while it is different, I have been very thorough and some of my experience may help.
Remove the compressor, condenser, accumulator, A/C lines and A/C heater box.
Now the hard components are gone:
1: You need a new heater box. You can source a non/A/C heater box or get an A/C delete heater box off Hawks, Ebay etc. I had good luck with a fiberglass one made by some guy in Russia. You will also need a non/A/C blower motor. The Non A/C blower motor is wired differently than the A/C. The A/C has two terminals on the plug. A hot and ground. The Non A/C has just hot. So you will need to ground the case of the Blower motor.
2: put an A/C delete pulley in place of the compressor.
3: It is up to you how you want to do the wiring, Either tuck it away or chop it out. You can remove the A/C relay, I don't know off hand where it is on an 84, but a google search will tell you.
Depending on how permanent you want to make this, you can cut the A/C wires off the HVAC controller and sit down with a clipper to remove all the A/C wiring. All the wires coming from the compressor can go, and the rest of the wires enter the firewall through a grommet by the passenger exhaust manifold, you can cut out anything A/C related.

If he has the original v belt setup on his lg4, he won’t need to worry about a dummy pulley for the ac location, he can just delete it and remove the belt.

Re: air con removal
Unless you're building a race car, removal of the A/C is senseless and totally red-neck...

It's real eeeeezie. Just look around at all the other cars that have been "upgraded" similarly.
Pair o dykes, Jeffrey Dahmer saw, maybe a big hammer, or even an air chisel; use liberally; should "improve" the car beyond your wildest imagination.

Re: air con removal
Respectfully, I disagree with everyone who thinks this is stupid. After I took out the big, ugly A/C compressor and A/C box it is so much easier to work on anything under the hood. Even taking off easy stuff like spark plugs, headers and valve covers was a nightmare with A/C in place. I get better cooling without the condenser in front of the radiator. Looks way better under the hood with all the junk removed, too.
I admit, cutting up a working A/C system is a shame if you live in the south, but as the OP said, he rarely uses it and wants more room under the hood. There are no shortage of people who will call A/C removal, or Carb swaps, or manual swaps, etc "dumb@ss mods". But isn't modifying your car more to your liking the whole point? It really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about your car, because it is your car, build it how you want. It's only "red-neck" if you do a $hitty job.
