Brown Slime in coolant tank
I have a 305 chevy small block carbed in my 87 trans am. Slowly fixing problem after problem with it in hopes to restore it. Finally got it running a bit ago and whenever I have it running for more than 10 seconds the coolant tank gets filled with brown slime. I even drained the radiator and coolant tank then refilled and it was the same brown slime. I then drained it again and without refilling after 10 seconds it filled with brown slime again. I know that I need to drain the engine as well but with the radiator and coolant tank already emptied, I cant see how the coolant from the engine could be coming up that quickly and in that color. Any info on what I should do would be awesome. Thanks.

Re: Brown Slime in coolant tank
The brown slime is probably floating on top of the system; probably transmission fluid if I was going to make a guess.
But yes, drain the whole system, including both of the block drain plugs, one of which is cleverly disguised as the knock sensor. Flush & refill with green juice and DISTILLED (not tap, not RO filtered, DISTILLED) water. Check to see if the trans fluid cooler is leaking; if so, either replace the radiator before you do all this (or rather, sort of in the middle of it all), or disconnect it, plug the fittings, and install an outboard trans cooler.

the drainer plugs on the engine block, are they accessible without jacking the car up? I was looking for them earlier and couldn't find them but then again Im not really sure what I am looking for.

Probably have to jack the car up, unless you're ALOT thinner than I am.
They're on the block, halfway between the front and the rear, about an inch or so above the oil pan. The right one is, as described, strikingly similar to a knock sensor. Left one is in the same place except … on the left. Both mush be removed to completely empty the block.
