Hi everyone,
can anyone understand what hack job they did to the fan wiring? The clutch fan works but it constantly blows the relays and I’m trying to wire it correctly if they did something that is not correct because it looks like a hack job. Just need someone to help me wire it back to stock and properly. Thank you!
To help someone understand the pictures,In the pictures looks like I have the clutch fan and a small fan in the front
Small fan (blue wire) is grounded with the yellow wire and combined with the green and white wire on the pigtail. The other wire for the fan is connected to the red wire which runs to another relay on the passenger fender..
the clutch fan red wire which you barely see if taped with electrical tape to the A wire on the pigtail connector. The ground wire is grounded in the same location as the yellow wire.
then you have the stock brown D wire (brown and white stripe) from the pigtail connector and is connected by the solid light brown that goes from the pigtail to the relay on the passenger fender.
Clutch fans are mechanical, You have electric fans (or fan). If that front fan is wired into the main fan wiring. That could be why you keep frying the relay. Id get rid of that secondary fan and wiring.
Maybe this will help, find your VIN.

thank you for replying. Yes I knew that added fan was the problem. I’ll follow the diagram for vin F. Looks complicated and wish I had a picture of an actual 86 to just copy.
Hello everyone,
adding to my old post for answers. I purchased a new fan relay pigtail from hawks and just wiring it up and removing the added fan that was blowing the relay. I just need help figuring out the wiring for the connector for the fans.
The yellow wire from the connector was running to the alternator (in picture)
and the red wire from the connector was running to the power wire for the added fan (in picture)
And they wired the light brown pinkish connector wire and they tapped into the brown and white on the relay pigtail (in picture)
also how do I rewire the two yellow wires for the temperature sensor.
thank you. I plan on installing ls1 fans but In the mean time I want to rewire the original relays. I know this car had over heating issues or else they won’t have added the fan but for now just want to put it back to original wiring. Thank you

Harness is a hacked up mess, rip it out get a fsm and rewire. The late 88 up relay and pigtail is a good upgrade.
you can achieve a lot looking at the post and schematic above 👆
what’s fsm? Full service manual? Yes it’s all hacked but I already paid like 35 bucks for the hawks pigtail so I just want to wire it up. I followed the diagram but maybe I missed something so double check. Just need help on those wires
I realize this is an old post but i used it to troubleshoot my 90 IROC Z 305 A/C fan not coming on. I found the bearings were bad in the motor. replaced it. still did not come on. replaced the pigtail still did not come on. hooked up the other wiring for the other fan that is wired to the temp sensor and it came on. also hooked the wiring for the a/c fan to the regular fan and it did not come on. Did a continuity test between the fan wiring pigtail black and red stripe wiring (which is red on the new connector mentioned in this post) to the middle relay on the left or driver side of the firewall and had a short like I should have. put in a new relay and now it works. Just a heads up, no matter where I looked everyone said there was another relay, I could not find a picture of it. To be exact, there are four relays on the driver side of the fire wall it is the middle one of the three large relays. the one on the fender is smaller than the others. Hope this helps others.
