What tool to separate R4 case?

I'm in the process of trying to reseal my r4. I have tried every combination of bridge and finger setup in my shop, but with the thin lip I keep slipping off. What makeshift tools have you guys used to press the case off?

I used a vise with flat bars to catch the lip.

Try youtube R4 reseal or rebuild or something like that. I remember seeing a video about it showing the process and tools

Re: What tool to separate R4 case?

Obviously the correct tool would be easier but when you don't have one you get creative. It doesn't come apart hard. You could probably use a hammer with a blunt ended tool if you are careful.

That's a charitable way of putting it. It's just a band of sheet metal about .050" larger than the compressor block, with 2 big O-rings around the block that the cover pushes on over. There's nothing really "holding it on" at all.

My 83 always used to leeeeeeek... never could find the problem. Finally one evening I was out in the garage where the car was parked, it was REAL quiet, and I heard this pshshwhshshwshshwwssshhh kind of sound with some burbling like bubbles, coming out from under the hood. So I'm like what the hell, I gotta find out what this is. Took QUITE AWHILE with the rubber hose stuck in my ear before I finally found it. Turns out one of those 2 welds you can see in acoupla those pics, that attaches that little claw thing to the cover that acts as a stop when pushing it on, was cracked. There were even a few drops of oil around it when I took it off to where I could see that part of it. *smh*
