Chip Question
Chip Question
I don't know where to get a good custom prom. Anyone have anything good to say about where they got one and how it was? I went through a complete race re-build including cam and heads and it does not run any better than it did before. It needs tuned which includes a custom chip. However, I have never done this and don't know where to get one. Any help would be good. I have orderforms for superchips and jet but they want $600.00. On one of my posts on the TBI board they said I could get set up for about 3. Anyone know where. I would have posted this on the prom board, but they said there would be no referrals.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys.

Read that. Read it again and again until it makes sense. Before you ask any questions on the PROM board just be warned that the most basic questions have been asked and are in that article. If that doesn't suit you try a search on the DIY-PROM board with the words "getting started" or "how to burn" and see for yourself how many times things have been asked. So just let this stuff soak in slowly and then go for it. Otherwise you'll have to pay someone to make you a chip based on their guesses of what the programming should be. Trust me, you don't want that and for the money, you should get the best. It'll run you about $400 to get what you need and the only thing that is not in that article that I would recommend is a bigger chip being run by an adapter for the TBI ecm. JPrevost on the TBI board has this stuff and he runs a 330 HP Vortec engine so you might want to call on his advice. There is also a guy on the DIY-PROM board, V8Astro Captain, that is pretty experienced with prom burning and TBI. On another post in this thread you said the engine you had was dynoed at over 400 hp. Why can't the people that dynoed it burn you a chip? Or was it that it was dynoed with a carb? I'll be honest with you, not many people have had success with the factory 2 barrel TBI even using the biggest bore and injector size. I'm sure you've read about the 360 HP barrier that many people say exists while others say is just a myth. By the math, the 360 HP theory seems to be true but cars don't tend to care too much about theory. It either works or it doesn't, that's what cars know. Now, a 4 barrel TBI will make more than 400 HP and that has definitely been proven.

Thanks for the advice. I will read it all over. By the way...I am keeping the 2barrel TBI, It was dyno'd with only a 400cfm carb (590cfm throttle body now) I just need to tune it and everyone says that this is the way. Thanks again

Dude, are you serious? I just read that thing like 30 times and I think that I just LOST like 30 IQ points. How is that better? I need a 4 year degree just to interpret the parts that I need. I am sure that it is much better because you have control over your car calibrations, but That is a lot of stuff. I think that I would understand if I saw someone using theirs but I am sure that there is no "eprom's for dummies" video. Is there an article that may be easier to understand or a class I can go to or something?
Eric
By the way...I have a 4 year degree in computer programming and do it on a regular basis...so I am no newcomer.

Nope, no videos or classes but there is something called the EFI POW WOW and it takes place in Ohio, sometimes twice a year. I don't know if there will be one this year. You can probably find out by joining the GMECM list at DIY-EFI.org. Like I said though, you have to let this stuff sink in. I didn't get this stuff in a day or a week. It took months. I don't have a four year degree in anything but I do work on cars for a living so I had an idea of many of the things that were being talked about. It's up to you. Getting a chip burned for you might be easier but how is it better? I guess you could get an aftermarket ecm that people have always said are easier to tune, too. Lots of us spend thousands of dollars and countless hours working on the killer engine we've always wanted but then don't want to spend the time in getting it tuned right. I've spent the time learning and for me it has been some of the best knowledge I have ever gained. The choice is yours.

You are right about spending the money for the killer motor and not tuning it right. This stuff is just kinda hard (because it is new) I am gonna try to absorb some more of this. I am not ruling it out. Just need to give it a try.
I am gonna do this but I have a problem already. I am trying to order the blank chips and they all tell me that the chip number (2732A) does not exist. Anyone have a 305 TBI that has bought these chips that has the part number for digi-key?
The other places that actualy have them are asking 6 dollars a chip. OUCH!!!

Most people say they get them on ebay. Check out this

Initially, it's $75 dollars but I think much better than playing with a prom burner which is ~$40.

Are we both talking about the same thing? I just mean the blank chips. Are you talking 75 dollars initialy for your first order? I only want like 10 or 20 to start. what do you mean "playing with a prom burner"? I will tell ya you have some great information. I could learn A LOT from you!

ooops, my bad, I meant UV eraser. Not prom burner as you need one of those and they aren't $40. If you get the 2732 chips they must be erased with a UV eraser prior to reprogramming. With one of those adapters I linked you get to use a 29c256 chip which holds the equivalent of eight 2732 chips. Also, the chip is electronically erasable which means you don't have to buy an eraser. So think about it. 10-20 chips at $4 (and that's cheap) plus an eraser at $40 is already over the initial $75 for the adapter and one chip. Additional 29c256 chips are about $5. The other thing is that you can program up to eight different calibrations onto one 29c256 so that you can swap between them and check different things you want to try at the turn of a ****. And you can't learn anything from me as all I know I have learned from others, so you are just learning from them!
SOOOOO many options. I am scared to ask some more questions too as I am not sure what has been "asked and answered 1001 times" but I don't know also what to look for in the searches. This is hard but it is a BLAST!!!

What some folks do is just start from the beginning of the DIY-PROM list. It's about two years old. Just start reading from the beginning.
Check this too. http://www.diy-efi.org/gmecm/ecm_info/1228746/
And this one is better. Mo' stuff. http://www.diy-efi.org/gmecm/ecm_info/1227747/
Make sure to read the Programming 101. The 747 ecm is about identical to the 746 ecm which you have. The 746 has an air temp sensor but they are interchangeable in about every other aspect.
