730 ECM minimums

Does anyone know what the minimum connections are to make a 730 work in a 1991 5L TPI camaro? I have tested every wire at a dozen times and the injectors still won't fire! I would like to not connect anything that is not really required to get it to run. This is a 911 request! Thanks.

have you disabled VATS in the chip?

No but I am re-using the vats module already in the car. I read about 2.5 volts on the vats wire when cranking which is good according to the GM service manual. The ECM has a new stock chip correct for this year car.

how about some info..

1 what are you swapping from. 165 to 730 i assume.
edit.. i see your going from tbi to tpi.
2. does the fuel pump prime when the key is turned?

3. how did you wire the ESC? remove the firewall mounted module and jump wires? or ??

4. you need most of the wires other than char cans,a.i.r., egr, A/C.

5. do you have a scan tool?

6. is the SES light on and fan running?

YES

YES

Left it in place. The service manual schematic shows only 1 wire from the distributor modile connecting to the ECM.

4. you need most of the wires other than char cans,a.i.r., egr, A/C.
OK.

5. do you have a scan tool?
NO.

6. is the SES light on and fan running?
SES and other dash lites good. Fan is not connected at this time.

This is probibly the problem. the 165 ECM had the ESC external of the memcal, the 730 moved the ESC to the memcal. there are 4 wires from the dist to the ECM.

Follow Mikes instructions on rewiring the ESC module need to jump a few wires and disconnect the firrewall mounted module.

New sensor/wires needed to be added:

BA4 (MAP +5v ref.)
BB6 (MAP GND)
GF15 (MAP Signal)

These signals can be brought in thru the harness on the MAF
wiring if you build an adaptor cable or splice into your MAF harness
plug. You MUST wire the adaptor or splice this way or risk an electrical
short:
BA4 (MAP +5v ref.) MAF pin B (165 ecm pin A11)
BB6 (MAP GND) MAF pin A (165 ecm pin D1)
GF15 (MAP Signal) MAF pin C (165 ecm pin B12)

I was able to build a MAF-MAP adaptor plug by cutting the "female"
connector from a broken MAF, and soldering the connectors to a
"wire harness" that terminates on a MAP plug. (available at most
any Auto Store)

'730 ECM signals not connected

BC1 (VSS output 2000ppm)
BB9 (VSS Low)
BB10 (VSS Hi)
BB11 (VSS output 4000ppm)

Thanks for the info. I will see how this compares to what I already have done. Since the car was a working TBI before we converted to TPI, it already has a MAP sensor. Are you talking about the module mounted on a bracket on the firewall near the windshield wiper motor? We have the same drawing as you included in the post so we already have the wires like this, I think. Do the 4-connector wires from the distributor first go to the firewall module before connecting to the ECM?

No, straight to the ECM. The ESC circuitry is the knock sensor. It now needs to be wired direct to the ECM, bypassing the old module on the firewall. Also the knock sensor needs to be changed to the 730 type, or IIRC a resistor (3.9K??) needs to be installed in series with the original sensor.

Thanks. The 730 knock sensor is one of the new parts I purchased. Since the car has to pass emissions every 2 years, I changed what can't be reused from the TBI to GM TPI parts.
