prom chip for "730", where 2 get? and what?
prom chip for "730", where 2 get? and what?
ok, i have my "730" ecm, tpi setup, and harness.... now i need the prom. Where is the best place to get one?? Im gonna be running a basically stock TPI setup, K&N filter, cat-back exhaust, and stock LT1 njectors. No major changes, so i figure a stock prom/memcal, whatever its called, would work fine for me. The car is a 350 5spd (92 harness and computer). anyone know exact part numbers? or got a stock chip they wanna get rid of?

Quoted right from the prom burning FAQ.
"Also, for your information, the current GM (AC Delco) part number for a new MemCal unit for all 1990-1992 350 F-Bodies is 16151348."

ok good, now i got a part number. Thank you John.
uhoh...i just realized something... can i use a 350 auto prom with my 5spd? I have a 5spd speed density harness, just never thought about that....
or do i need a custom prom burned to work with my 350 MAP TPI setup and 5spd?

Is this a conversion? If so do you have VATs setup? Just a few questions to ask. I have done a TPI in a 69 Camaro if you have some questions email me and I can give you some info.
sort of a conversion..., its a 88 iroc convertible, engine now is TBI, but im dropping in a TPI motor. I swapping all the stock interior wiring with the interior harness from a 92 RS so the firewall connector will be from a 92, and i'm getting a 92 tpi 5spd harness to plug right into that. The Vats setup is all there with the 92 harness/dash/steering colum. Motor will be all stock(including emissions) except for maybe a flowmaster muffler and K&n filter. i just need a stock chip for a 92 350, but they never came with manual...can i run an auto chip?

OK I think you can do it but there is a plug at the end of the fitting where it would normmally plug into the tranny for the TCC lockup. Also there is a switch in the PROM between manual and auto so you may be wise to try to get a manual tranny chip. If you look up a place called Jags That Run in the Bay area they could tell you for sure. I know about the plug because I have one from the car I converted from.

also i'm new to this board so i am in the learning faze .even though i have been driving my car for six years like this

You also need a memcal if the 730 ecm is out of a non-v8 car. Problem is, does anyone have a part number for this?? Thanks.

When you order a memcal make sure that you order one for the correct engine size. The 305's and the 350's had different knock sensors. Anything above a 327 will use the 350 knock sensor. Also the memcal for an auto will work. I don't think you will get an error code. But I don't think you will ever get into highway mode either because it will not see the TCC being locked. Look at what you have and decide if you want a aftermarket custom burned chip or better yet burn one yourself. Look at the PROM burning section. I did a conversion with an aftermarket harness, etc. I just bought an AutoProm and found that I was running way rich in the lower RPM's, etc. Granted I have done a number of mods and I am running a 327 but still..... The aftermarket guys will not tell you stuff like that. In fact the guy I bought the setup from would not tell me if my chip was burned for a VSS and I went with a carburated TCC lockup setup because I didn't want to get a VSS only to find it wouldn't work. That was only the beginning so be careful out there. All the PROM guys will tell you that the only way to do it is burn your own chip. You will then get what you want and you can see how your car is running. SD systems are especially sensitive to this and any mod like a EGR, Charcoal Canister, K&N, AIR pump, no CATS will change how the thing runs and you will never get it right. My car always seemed to run right but now I know that was not the case at all!
yea, id need that memcal too, any one got part numbers? the ecm is from a 92 v6 car i stripped. however the rust is so extensive in my project car, im debating if i wanna continue or sell it and let someone else restore it... i dunno anymore

I had to order a stock memcal to go with my burned custom chip when I bought the 730 ECM. Are you saying I needed the 350 memcal? I think I put in a 305 memcal. My car runs good and I have the 3.9 ohm knock sensor installed. However, when I try to run it WOT from first gear and shift manually, it craps and farts all the way up to shifting into second at 5000 rpms. I am having chip issues I think. Not sure if my problem is an open/close loop issue or not though. Sorry I piggybacked the post...I will post my own if necessary. Thanks.

Yes the knock sensors are different. They are tuned to a different frequency. When GM went with the SD system they incorporated the knock setup in the memcal. I believe the older MAF units had a separate knock module. BTW I have a V6 memcal that I put my burned chip in and it did the same thing when I started it and it idled at 1500 rpm....

Yes. The knock sensors and the memcals have to be matched to the engine size. On the 730's the knock sensors are controlled through the memcal. The memcal knock sensor hardware was moved onto the memcal so both the knock sensor and the memcal has to be matched to the engine size. The MAF systems had a separate knock module. I don't know about the 6 bangers but the V8's have a different knock sensor for the 305 as opposed to the 350's. So if you are running a V6 memcal in a V8 then I would say it is wrong and needs to be changed. Like I said I have just started to burn my own chips and I had a spare memcal from a V6 that I yanked from a yard when using that with my burned prom it was doing basically the same thing. I then put my original memcal in with the burned chip and no more backfires, etc. I don't know if the knock sensors changed between the MAF and SD cars if you are dealing with the same size engine but you could do a cross reference with the part numbers to see.
