ESC or distributor problem?

I am having trouble getting my car to carry as much timing at idle as it is programmed to. I get very little differance when I unhook the ESC wire on the timing (less than 5 degrees) and it idles best at 28-30 degrees at idle and is programmed to do so. It shows 28-30 degrees on the datamaster scan logs but it isn't seeing it with the timing light. Anyone have any ideas?

P.S. Base timing is set at 6* BTDC

If this is your '92 with the stock ECM. . . After the EST wire has been disconnected and then reconnected the ignition needs to be off for a minimum of 10 seconds before restarting the engine.

If that has been done and the advance still doesn't come back then it is possible the ignition module is bad. If it is a wiring problem most of the time the SES light will stay on.
