Get Complete HSR MPFI set-up or do it cheaply

If money isn't a problem when swapping to Holley Stealth Ram, do you think you should:-

Get the complete HSR MPFI Set-up including the Commander 950 ECM etc. Link below:-
http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin...FMS/SR/SR.html

Or do it 'on the cheap' and just program your own PROMs etc? Link below:-
http://stealthram.com/costtoswap.html

Do the benefits of the 950 justify the extra cost?

Many thanks for any opinions.

Which "benefits" do you mean?

Best I can tell, you can use a WB for closed loop, P&H injectors, and N2O fuel are the only benefits. So if you need less than 55lbh injectors, that leaves one. And the WB thing costs extra.

Oh, unless your skill level requires a telephone help line.

You can get a 7730 about anywhere. And it won't cost $800 or if your unlucky, take 2-3 weeks.

I'm still gathering parts for my HSR. But I'll have about $2200 total into my setup except for fuel system. Starting with nothing but a carb car. The $800 for just the 950 covered my laptop, AutoProm, ECM, Memcal, Adapter, & chips. So that part is a wash. Until you do a second car!

HSR parts-
Intake w/rails $520
Injectors 37's $330
85-88 58mm TB $310
TPS & IAC $95-assuming you don't have these
MAT $?
Dizzy $150
Harness $25

So, if you start from zero, the price is about the same.
So IMOP, it comes down to tuning and maybe replacement cost.
From what I've been told,
A 7730 has more tables so you can tweak more things to get better drivability. If that's important to you.

And yes you can do a 2 or 3 bar MAP with a 7730.
Probably the N2O to with some work.

well , imo , i have talked to a few of you guys about this same subject, i beleive it really depends on what you want to do with your car, in my case i have a 8.5-1 388 with a t-88 intercooler and nos so i cant get by by just burning a chip i am going to either use the commander plug in kit for the l-98 or im going to use the fast system, i am leaning more towards the holley plug in kit because it is a bit cheaper and those guys are a little more helpful. but in your case if you a re staying n/a then i would see about going with a chip because from what i have understood from 1bad91z is that the chip can be made to work great on a na motor but on boost and 50lb plus injectors and all that crap you need to get a programmable dfi and get it wide-banned.

WHY?.

With some of the tools now available you can do real time tuning with a GM ECM.

GM put alot of time into the Syclone ecm and program so that it could run boost. Not to mention the GM has a proper torque conveter clutch program, and wastegate control if you turn out to need that.

And with some clever thought you might be able to even manage the NOS with the stock ecm. Or control it for alot less then the cost of an aftermarket ecm.

GET THE COMMANDER SETUP IF MONEY IS NOT AN ISSUE!

Guess what, after a year for burning chips, I have a commander now, and love it, and got the setup better than it's ever been, and it took me two weeks to get it thatway!

Many thanks for all the comments guys!

Twilightoptics:- I'm glad to hear you say that the tune is now better than it was before. As I said money isn't an issue, just really ease of set-up and use etc. I've been burning chips with mild to moderate success for the last year but feel that is may be the route to go down eventually.
