I was wondering, cause if you were to swap in a 96 and up engine you would have to swap that scanner port too right? if they are the same aldl ports as OBDI what programs are out there for lap tops? I mean my lap top is way more powerful then one of those hypertech programmers so it would only seem resonable that I could do similar things with it.

Yes, OBDII ALDL ports are different.
Yes, there are OBDII scanning & tuning software programs available. Be aware that none are cheap.
Yes, the laptop-based stuff beats the HPP by a mile.
If you're talking about the LT1/LT4 engines specifically, IMHO a much better option is simply to use a '94-'95 OBDI PCM in place of the '96+ OBDII box. It's a very simple conversion, and the '8051 OBDI PCMs have more options available for scanning and tuning. (I'd recommend Freescan or DataMaster for scanning, and TunerCat with the $EE def for tuning)

I bought my 95Z28 with a 96 LT1 motor in it. It came with an OBDll ecm. I since switched it to an OBDl for tuning purposes. I am buying tunercat for it from Craig Moates.
