Lack of ECU explanation
Okay here's the deal.
I went to check the fault codes on my pals 84 Firebird 2.8v6.
On looping the prom connector pins with a wire to get the codes like I would normally do on my 85 Transam, there was no light. On further investigation there was no bulb, bulb holder or hole for the Check Engine light.
Looking behind the passenger crashpad there is also no ECM to be found although there are harness connectors visible. This explains why no codes. The firebird is a Van Nuys manufactured car, but what would be the explanation for no ECM?
My theory to-date on this is that the car was made at Van Nuys but exported to Canada for sale hence no ECM. What I am unsure of is that the speedo gauge is MPH (with the small KPH) I would have thought the car being exported to Canada it would have had KPH instead.
Any help or suggestions on this would be really appreciated.

There are a couple of items you can look for. Check the drivers (left hand) door where it opens. Usually there will be a sticker that willl say if it complies to US emissions regulations.
An export model to Canada won't have a 'U.S emission complience' sticker. If not then there is a good possibility there is no ECU.
IIRC this year would have a carb. Check if there are wires going to it. If not, then no ECU.
OTOH, it may be a U.S. car (with door sticker) and someone removed the ECU equipment.
RBob.
