Bad ECM?

I have an 87 with a 2.8L. The car wasn't running when I got it and when I try to read the ECM i don't even get the service engine light. The light doesn't come on when I try to start the engine either. The engine cranks and almost fires but won't start and keep running. Since I get no response from the ECM when I short the A&B on the ALDL is seems like it could be a bad ECM. Has anyone seen this problem or have some helpful advice?

With the SES light not coming on with the key-on, engine-off check the bulb. Many times they have been removed.

I know, short answer, but check that and we can go from there.

(At key-on the SES should light, then blink off for about 1/2 second, then back on solid).

I changed the bulb already with a known good one. I also checked all the fuses.

There is/may be another fuse that is under the hood. Check along the passenger side fender for a wire with an inline fuse. Sometimes it may be difficult to find. Runs from the radiator support junction block along the fender line to the firewall. The fuse is more towards the front of the car.

Also, does the fuel pump run for 2 seconds at key on?

If the above fuse is good and the fuel pump doesn't run (just the 2 seconds key on run), then yes, good possibility the ECM is bad.

I can't hear the fuel pump run either at key on or when applying 12v to G on ALDL. Was thinking bad fuel pump but unsure since there is no response from ECM only the fans running. When trying to run pump in bypass I think the ECM still has to be good for it to work but not sure.

Have you checked to make sure the ecm has power? If you can get ahold of the pinouts, you can simply check with a volt meter whether or not it has power.

Probably not the problem but with these old cars you never know what could have happened to it. Might save $20 and a trip to the yard. I was removing what seemed like 300 lbs of wire, wire nuts, and duct tape from under the dash of my truck I bought from some hillbilly in a doublewide and I found him stealing +12 volts from what looked like the dedicated power lead for the ecm. He was using it to run a crappy alarm system and some other 12 volt accessories for a trailer. The things people do to their cars...

The fuel pump should come on when you hit the test terminal. IIRC, that sends power right to the pump itself.
