7747 to 7730 ECM swap...

I have all my schematics and parts ready to go. My only question is what do I do about the VSS? The 7747 has a magnetic sensor and a cog wheel (DC I think). The 7730 needs a gear driven (AC I think).

Does anyone know if I can swap one out for the other?

Yes, there is a bit select for which sensor you run in $8D.
You want a 4000 pulse per mile signal. I don't recall what your 89 puts out.
The wiring has to match too. Try a VSS or T56 swap search on DIY Prom. The link I'm looking for is apparently on my laptop.

Code:
L8018: FCB $52 ; AFR OPT WD 3, 0101 0010
;----------------------------------------------
;
; b7, 1 = CCP WHEN OUTPUT ENRGIZED
; b6, 1 = MAG SPD SENSER INSTALLED
; b5, 1 = INT RESET WHEN BLM CELL CHG
; b4, 1 = OPT INV MAT Lk Up
;
; b3, 1 = UNLOCK TCC IN DECEL FUEL C/O
; b2, 1 = CPU Auto Ratio Sel, 0 = TCC
; b1, 1 = INT RESET WHEN Accel Enr IN WORK
; b0, 1 = COOL FOR IDLE SPD TIME OUT
;----------------------------------------------
I think b6 is what I'm looking for. As you can see it says 1 = MAG SPD SENSER INSTALLED. That sounds like what I need...

I'm not sure if I need it set to 1 or 0. The only car I've had experience with this ECM was a '90 Firebird 305 TPI. It had the gear driven AC VSS.

Well the sensor in your Astro would be optical not magnetic. It generates a DC square wave signal. I think you should put a 0 there.

I must be search retarded because I tried every combination except for that one.

Thank you once again RBob, and to all for your input.

On another note...pin F10 on the 730 is "cranking enable" and the wiring diagram shows it runs to the passkey encoder module. This wouldn't be the same thing as "crank input" (pin C9) on the 7747 would it?

Not the way I read the diagram for a 747. I'm using the schematics from the manuals section of diy-efi.org.
730 F10 is for a 0-5v/freq signal per the diagrams on Ludis.
Don't think it would like 12v.
And it's listed as VATS input too.
The diagrams on http://www.cruzers.com/~ludis/schematics.html
Tell what the pins are for and more.
Make sure to name them in numerical order when saving them.

If pin F10 on the 730 is looking for a 5v input then it's definatly not the same thing. Pin C9 on the 7747 goes right to the solenoid on the starter.

Another question...The 730 has 2 reference voltage pins (A4, A5). A4 goes to the MAP sensor. A5 goes to the TPS.

On the 7747 both MAP and TPS are provided 5v by the same pin (C14).

Would it be safe to run A4 and A5 on the 730 into pin C14 on my 7747 harness? Essentially running the two 5v pins on the 730 in parallel?

730 Connectors

Looks to be ok.
Sorry, I'm on dial up so I didn't have time to look at 1.6m of pics.

cool thanks.

Running A4 and A5 in parallel will be much cleaner than adding another wire to the harness.
