VSS - conversion to non-ecm power train

My '91Z had been converted to a carb/HEI set up, and most of the ECM hardware has been removed from the car.
Speedo now does not work. The VSS sensor is still on the tranny (t5) however I do not even know where to start to convert the signal to something the Speedo can read without the ECM... It seems that the conector/wire harness to the VSS has been removed as well.
Someone mentioned that there is a conversion kit available for such an application, but he wasn't able to give me datails.
Any info would be appreciated.

Dakota Digital SGI-5 Box should do the trick for you.

Ed,
Does the SGI act like the non-TPI equipped (TBI L03) VSS Buffer?
Is it easy to instal? Plug in, or?
Dose it have to be calibrated for a stock application, or can it be order for my specific application? Is it hard to calibrate?, especially since I don't even know what speed I am traveling at?
Thanks
Andrew

Sorry for the late reply Andrew:

I cannot answer your first question, but I will say it has numerous combinations. There are various input and output settings, so I am sure it will work.

It is not hard to install. Wires just slip into a slot and a small screw is tightened and hold the wire in place. Here are the instructions that are in PDF format: http://www.dakotadigital.com/pdf/sgi-5b.pdf

Calibration can be done with the key on/engine off, or while the vehicle is running.

In order to calibrate your speedometer, you will need to do it one of two ways that I can think of.

1. Use a scanner such as Auto-X-Ray while you are driving,
2. Or, follow a pace car while going down an open stretch of interstate.

Good luck, Ed
