The code 42 will show up after the timing has been checked. My understanding is that in California the smog test has the SA timing checked. Running the engine with the BYPASS connector open will produce a code 42.

Can remove the - battery cable for 10 seconds to clear the codes. Then see if 42 comes back. As you figured code 32 is EGR and it is most likely a mechanical issue.

yea we had to pull the wire by the blower to check the timing he said it was 4 and should be around 6 but in the limits, as for the egr, just replace it ? and reset ecu?

I would reset the ECU just to get rid of the codes. That way you know that if any are set that they are new. Otherwise it takes 50 starts w/o an error to clear them.

As for the EGR, it can be any number of items: solenoid, vacuum line, EGR valve, carbon in the head/intake EGR ports.

An interesting item: if the car in question is your '88 TBI, the base timing is 0 deg. Setting it higher to 4 or 6 degrees will increase NOX.
