VATS module compatibility
I have an 89 RS that i just swapped a 350TPI into. I installed the factory wiring harness for the TPI and i also swapped the ECM too. The motor, the ECM, and the wiring harness are all from a 92 IROC that was totaled and the guy parted it out. Now that i have everything installed, i seem to be getting an intermittent code 46 (pass key failure). Sometimes the car will start just from the key, other times i have to turn the key on and use a remote starter to turn the engine over. i know the VATS module is allowing the fuel pump to engage but for some reason it wont let the starter activate. When i put a tech 1 scanner on it, it says that the pass key is ok. Im wondering if anyone might have any idea what i should start testing/ looking at.
I know that if i go to the dealership and buy a new, unprogrammed VATS module that it will learn the first key that is used to start the vehicle. But i dont want to tear apart my entire dash to get to that module unless i ABSOLUTELY have to. Im wondering if i might just have a faulty wire between the ignition and the starter or if it is just a compatibility problem between the original VATS module and the newer ECM?

Re: VATS module compatibility
just burn a chip or have a chip burned that vats is disabled no need to worry abought it
that and for how much a new vats modual would cost you could get all the stuff to burn your own chips and get more power and better gas mileage out of that motor

Re: VATS module compatibility
Wow. I am having a very similar problem. I replaced the whole ignition cylinder in my car with a brand new one from a dealership. When I turn the key, the fuel pump engages, the dash lights come on, but the car won't turn over. What is this chip that you are talking about and where could I get one? Also, if this disables the vats, can I still use the VATS ignition cylinder or do I have to get one without? Any advice would be great...
