1986 to 1986 motor swap

I have a 86 sport coupe with 2.8 and T5 , bought a 86 i-rock with 305 tpi and 700r4. Was wondering how the computer issues are going to go seeings how chevy did not put out that configuration due to fuel boiling issues, and how would I get around that. Any help would be apprecated

In 86 you could get an iroc (not i-rock) with a manual trans if the car came with a carb. It would be a lot less work to put the manual trans in the iroc. I think you'll still have to do some computer tuning or swap out the chip for the manual trans. If you are going to put the 305 in the V6 car you're going to have to swap out not only the engine but the wiring harness and computer.

Re: 1986 to 1986 motor swap

You want a 305 with a manual trans? Ok first sell v6 car. Buy complete 5 speed setup for a v8 and swap in. Or pull engine, trans, wiring harness, and pcm from v6 car, sell it cheap. Buy a complete 5 speed setup for a v8 (the pedals from your v6 setup would work). Swap wiring harness and pcm over to v6 car, swap in engine, swap in 5 speed setup. The v6 tranny uses a different bellhousing and input shaft which won't work with a v8 engine. You didnt mention what kind of induction your v6 has, chances are you will need to drop the fuel tank, replace the pump and fuel lines. Either way unless the Iroc is a complete pos it would be easier to just swap a 5 speed setup into it. Get a v8 trans. Don't worry about fuel boiling issues, tpi 5.0's and 5 speeds came from the factory togather, just not all years. It was probably more of an issue with getting it certified than anything else.

Re: 1986 to 1986 motor swap

Thanks guys for your help. Feeling a little discouraged,I have a 1986 t top sport coupe 2.8 t5 mpi with 50,000 miles no rust (down under) it sat in the sun for 8 years and got the paint baked. Also have a 1986 t top irock z with 305 tpi 700r4 with a pile of miles (187000) a little rust here and there but still looks and runs great(needs alternator). Thinking about selling or trading for one car.Still think I have a nice setup, just a lot of time and work, thanks again for your time.

TPI (tuned port injection) is a MPI (multi port injection) system. When you open the hood just make sure that it looks like there is a giant metallic spider sitting on top of the engine.
