OBD I scanner on laptop
OBD I scanner on laptop
I've got an 89. Was looking at getting a scanner so I can check out what my car is doing. And I'd like to set the min air speed as well as I don't want to go by the RPM's on the dash.
I figure I'd get something to hook up to a laptop. Where would be a good place to get an ALDL OBD I to USB cable? Something not too expensive. And I've heard something about you may have to turn a 10k resistor on or off?
And what would be a good free program to download that will tell me what my car is doing via the cable? I have Windows 7.

www.moates.net for the cable.
www.tunerpro.net for the scan tool software.
No need for the 10K to scan your TBI ECM ('8746). And best not to use it as it will change how the ECM runs the engine.
Note for the TBI set up there is also WinALDL:

Different then TUner Pro, but it too is a decent program.

I also plan on using this on an 89 with L98 engine that has Maf. So, I think I need the resistor for that.

Re: OBD I scanner on laptop
I know this is a very old thread, but this came up when I was searching for a laptop based program, that I could scan OBDI & OBDII vehicles with.
I was on here a couple of years ago, as I was given this forum to help me tune a CCC carb on my 1987 Cutlass. You guys graciously let me stay on here, as I was searching for help, and even though I don't have a "Third Gen Camaro", you guys have been very helpful.
But, now my AutoXRay 6000 scan tool has taken a dump, and will not 'read' either OBDI, or II vehicles, saying that it's not 'communicating' with the vehicle. I tried to hook it up to my Olds, and the 'check engine' light flashes slightly, so I KNOW it's communicating, but it will come back, and say it's not. I even contacted their tech support, and hooked it up to my laptop (the only thing I have with a serial port!), and downloaded the latest operating software, but it's still not communicating. I loved the 'live data' streaming feature it had, as that was instrumental in fine tuning my carb. I was looking on Amazon, and ran across this Equus 3140 scan tool, that supposedly does both OBDI, and II, but after reading the reviews, it won't read my car! There was a review on there from someone who has a '87 Monte SS, and it won't read his, so I figure it won't read my Olds!
So, I figure instead of trying to fix this, or buying another scan tool, that might, or might not work, I thought that I would try to use my laptop to be my scan tool. I clicked on the links above, but the 'api vig link' isn't coming up. The 'ALDU1 and CABL1 link comes up, and shows some cords, but I don't know if this comes with the software, too. I just bought a '94 Buick Roadmaster, with the LT-1 engine, and I see that this cable will work on this car, but I honestly don't know what I'm doing, and I need a little tutorial on how exactly all this works in conjunction with each other.
So, the question I'm trying to ask, is what is out there, that not only works for OBDII, but that I can also use for my OBDI cars ('84 & '87 Olds Cutlass, and H/O, and this '94 LT-1)?
You guys saved my bacon a couple of years ago, helping me with my CCC, so I'm hoping you can again!
Thanks,
John

Re: OBD I scanner on laptop
Just as a side note to this, I just got off the phone with Moates, and he did tell me that the cable that I'm looking at, is more to 'reflash' the LT-1, but not really to do what I want it to. He also said that the '94 and '95 LT-1's are the most finickey to reflash, and they're not for a beginner. I'm not really wanting to reflash anything, but if there was a program for more mpg's, I'd do that, but he said that there weren't any "programs" for that, but you need to know what you're doing in order to use the software. So, I really don't feel like blowing up a car I just bought, so I don't think I'll be using that software!
He also said that he doesn't believe that program would do anything for my G-Bodies, anyway.
So, my original question still exists, as all I want to do, is be able to do the live data streaming, and be able to get rid of trouble codes on both OBDI and II vehicles.

Re: OBD I scanner on laptop
I don't know of any that will do both or any that will do all?
I have an AutoXray 7000 and it was best tool I have ever ourchased for this kind of stuff. Compared to a freinds latest SnapOn model it does everything we could find and test, half the size and 1/10th the money...

I would still like to get the OBDII software, and cable for my laptop, as it's cheap ($50.00). Even with that cheap software, the pictures they show of the 'dashboard', showing all of it's functions, looks impressive! I can only imagine what the expensive software does!
