'730 ecm in a foxbody- its runs! with short vid

as the title states and yes i might be a little but i feel more comfortable playing with a gm ecm. today i started into tearing down the mustang and getting rid of the un-needed ford harness and ecm. i have all the necessary stuff(i think) including wiring diagrams, except for the proper memcal. ive figured out that i will use certain parts of the ford harness(if its in good enough shape) to power up the ecm, starting, and HEGOs. ill have to install a reluctor and VSS in the tranny and find an electronic speedo. only questions i have are petaining to the PIP and TFI, i read somewhere on here that they can be used with modifications in the code but i cant find the thread anymore. wish i would have fav'ed it. if i can use that than ill be golden. any suggestions? thanks!

Re: not sure where to put this so... '730 ecm in a foxbody

anyone have any info?
*EDIT* found this

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...stem-f250.html

seems like the gm icm will interface, id just like to know for sure if it will. i was just reading an article and it said that the early PIPs used 4 vanes and later PIPs used 36 tooth wheels.

I have no idea whether the TFI or PIP interface can be used with a GM ECM. If you use a distributor with a magnetic pickup, it will interface to the GM ignition module. That does work as shown in the link you found.

that diagram in the above thread is with the older duraspark dizzys. i read into it further and the PIP is a digital signal, which wont interface with the gm icm(i think). ill do more digging to find out if i can use the TFI/PIP, otherwise ill have to convert to the magnetic pickup from the DS. heres some info on the wave pattern of the PIP. does the signal from the TFI look like it will interface with the ecm?

Re: not sure where to put this so... '730 ecm in a foxbody

today i got back on the project, old harness is out and i have the new one laid out. started soldering connections and ended up at the fuel pump circuit. i left the relay for the mustang intact under the driver seat, only because i want to keep as much intact as possible. since theres pretty much one signal wire to activate the fuel pump relay and the GM harness uses 2 inputs to activate the fuel pump relay, can i tie the GRN/wht wire to the gray wire from the OPSU to the same wire? or would i be asking for trouble. i was thinking of using a diode on the GRN/wht wire so there wouldnt be a chance of any problems. or i could pull the dash and driver seat and wire it up as it is in the wiring diagram. i was going to just use the diode to simplfy things. is this a good idea?

The purpose of the OPSU is to run the pump in the event the Relay fails. That is why the OPSU will connect to 87a at the relay.

You could tie them together, no diode would be needed, but this would turn the relay on from either source. Also you may need to disable the fuel pump CEL triggers if you tie them together.

Re: '730 ecm in a foxbody

thanks Six, ive got that issue figured out. got the injector harness wired up and started to sort all the wires a little better. bought an ICM yesterday, and i plan on buying a duraspark dizzy reman from advance too. since theres no real estate in or on the DS, looks like ill have to remote mount the ICM. doable?
would i need to buy a heat sink?

and wheres a good source to find one?

whats the furthest away from the dizzy can i mount it?

more questions to come but to keep it simple for now this is it.

thankies

I don't have any pictures, but I mounted my ICM about 18" to 24" of sire length away from the dizzy in my Datsun, with a single drywall screw holding it to the inner fender, no heat sink, and it worked fine for the few months I ran it that way, not saying it was ideal, or will work for someone else, but it worked fine in my case.

It is recommended to use a heat sink. A PC CPU heatsink can be used. You could even use the computer fan then as well. lol

Heat sinking the ICM is a good idea, they run hot. The module needs to be grounded, usually via the mounting screws. The leads from the pickup coil to the ICM should be twisted together. This helps eliminate common mode noise. And keep them away from the spark plug wires along with other wires in the engine compartment.

A decent module to get would be from a '89 or '90 full size chevy van with a 5.7L engine. VIN K IIRC. I always recommend and use GM ICM's.
