Re: Modded programmable memcals for sale on Ebay!
Thanks MedVader for the Kind words.
I wish it were true, but it costs me way more than a couple bucks! I have quite a few hundred dollars in just equipment and a test bench for testing and verifying them. Programmable chips and V6 Memcals are getting much harder to find and way more expensive. Then you need the knowledge to solder the chips and program them and the time to do it. Many people don't want to do that.
I have previously given full credit to 3GO for getting me started on this venture but I need to give thanks to the people on this board that have helped me set this up to help those that have special needs and want an economical Memcal to get their car started.
Thank to RBob for his quick thorough answers to all of my questions and Tunedperformanc for his great help and support. EagleMark and his fantastic website Gearhead-EFI has also been a great resource for information.
I want to thank everyone that has bought a Memcal from me and especially the people that publicly give my work a thumbs up. I appreciate my customers and gladly spend time on the phone and through emails everyday helping them with their projects.

Not too hard to do it yourself, but you need to buy tools and work thru the learning curve.
Looks like a good service and think I'll give it a go.

It really is. Lots of guys can't or don't have the time to DIY, or the time it's a good deal for the cost.
I'm just glad it was someone who gives back to help others, not just someone taking the DIY work for profit.

I was doing something similar 6-8 years ago, adding sockets to the stock memcals and then selling them with custom burnt chips installed. This price seems fair for the work involved. Good luck!

Just ordered a custom tune MEMCAL from utilityguy2 . I don't just order from anyone, especially when it comes to a tune, but he is held in high regards here, and I felt he was absolutely my best choice.

I do chips like this for my myself, family and friends, but I once considered doing it on ebay just like you are doing. I think the price is just about right, not giving them away, while not ripping people off. I also noticed your solder work looks good in the pics. Its sometimes hard to de-solder cleanly without any melted spots on the plastic.

Re: Modded programmable memcals for sale on Ebay!
I would like to get a extra memcal But where do I put the 3.9K resister ? Is that something you can just enable ? Its stated its disabled. Can you do programing for a 383 If I list the engine parts ? I know there is not a knock sensor for a 383 but I would like to use a 350 knock sensor for knock retard.

got your message forgot to ask were does this 3.9K resister go to make the knock sensor work ?

Re: Modded programmable memcals for sale on Ebay!
You can use a 3.9k ohm resistor to disable the knock by tricking the ECM into thinking it has an operational knock sensor.
What I said was to use a 3.9k ohm knock sensor, which is for the SD TPI V8 engines, IF the programming for it was enabled in the Prom. The Knock sensor is enabled or disabled in programming.

Knock filters and knock sensors are based on frequency and are matched to each other for cid. If you have a 350 knock sensor and a v6 knock filter you may get false knock counts. I believe utilityguy2 is disabled the code knock vs coolant temperature so no retarding will be done bye them ecm. Im not sure and am not speaking for him just a though.

Re: Modded programmable memcals for sale on Ebay!
Good thing you mentioned that you disable the knock sensor. I was about to purchase a memcal from you. That's a low blow that your selling modded MemCals that has a disabled failsafe such as the knock sensor circuitry. Are you disclosing this to your customers? I think that's bad business. I'd hate to know that someone's engine got destroyed due to detonation.
RS92, Yes it is fully disclosed. Many, if not most people have modified engines which a stock knock filter will not be accurate for anyway. Many want the knock circuit to be disabled. For instance it would be foolish to run a 383 with a stock knock filter and since there never was a factory one what would you want to do then? Even as engines age, the knock signature changes and shows a lot false knock.
If someone wants it enabled for a pure new stock engine, I use the 3.4l Memcal which has almost exactly the same filter, as the cylinder bore is the same. For those that want a GM stock filter, I have those also.
In my opinion, the knock setup for these engines was a poorly designed system as any external noise or worn parts could indicate knock with the resultant timing changes. Perhaps even worse, the knock sensor may not detect detonation when there is knock and you would not know it.
I much prefer doing the knock the old fashioned way of listening to the engine to see what it needs. Don't put all of your faith in that system.
Even with knock disabled, you can still see the knock count when logging to see if there is knock at which point you can do the timing changes yourself. I hope that clears some of the questions up.

Re: Modded programmable memcals for sale on Ebay!
No you will not get a code as long as you have the 3.9k ohm knock sensor. Yes it will work but since the filter is for a different engine with a different bore and different noise signatures, it may give more or less knock counts. The knock filters are different on every engine and engine combination so there are possibly hundreds of different ones. Even on a stock filter, as the engine wears, you will get more knock counts and as a result timing will erroneously be pulled. This affects performance and mileage. Basically a improperly timed engine.

@utilityguy2 - thanks for the interesting posts about the knock sensor.
I want to buy one of your memcals shortly but and still undecided on a couple of the options.
Your service seems good and at a fair price.

On a auction site, there is a this "89 Camaro 305 TPI Auto PROM MEMCAL CHIP 1989 APYM 3493 firebird trans am Iroc" which has the fail safe knock sensor stuff for $109. For $20 more, you have the safe reliable Knock Sensor feature.

Re: Modded programmable memcals for sale on Ebay!
Personally, I'm happy to spend about a hundred bucks to save having to buy the programming tools and then learning all of the TPI ECM nuances.
This guy seems to know his stuff and if he picks up a few bucks for his time on the way thru good luck to him.
If was charging a thousand bucks you'd expect a lot, but for this sort of money it's good value.
It's also good to have this sort of support for our cars and we should encourage services like this.
