Finally running and driving. Rough idle

Got my 383 stroker 87 iroc going finally. Running hrs for injection system. Using the base map for 383 that comes with the commander system. Has problems idioing and will eventually shut off. Has drivability issues because of this. For instance will shut of / stall when going down hill and coming to a stop sign if you leave it in second gear. Is jerky in low gears (1st and second) unless you give it a good amount of gas and work the clutch (tko 600 trans). Wondering where I start th tuning process to improve this. Thinking I need a better idle and they decell fuel shut off needs to be adjusted so doesn't stall slowing down. First ever build. Took me forever and still not done but learning lots. Feels good to drive it at least.

If this is an newly rebuilt motor you better make sure you're not dumping too much fuel in it. You'll wipe out the rings before you know it.

Re: Finally running and driving. Rough idle

it is a rebuilt motor. I do not think it has to much fuel as it sounds like it does not get enough at idle. What would be a sign that it is getting to much fuel?

dont have black smoke. Smells like strong exhaust. Where do you start changing on the computer first to adjust the idle to keep the engine running down hill and parked?

It can be real rich and not smoke. I just got done redoing a 351 Cleveland with washed out rings. His calibration was off enough to do damage but he never really saw any noticeable smoke.

Get it fixed before you go too far.

It could be too lean or too rich. My car will idle rich no issue however. DFCO may have an option to shut it off at under say 15 MPH. Another option is to disable CL under say 15 mph. It would be nice to have a WB as that would tell you the story. I ran OL >15 mph and idle for years. It was mainly a crutch but I have a larger cam so I thought it was a good idea. Next season I will run CL >15 and at idle. May be OK.

Some people never see it as it sometimes takes someone following from behind. If it's way too rich, you will see black smoke. It's simple physics.

At this point, I don't believe that jlanham actually knows whether it's too rich or too lean. Both scenarios can cause his symptoms.

jlanham, you need to buy the cable adapter, download Tuner Pro and start data logging.

Here's a good place to start :

Re: Finally running and driving. Rough idle

I have a data logger on the computer laptop just has to be plugged in because the battery doesn't hold charge. I do have a big cam, 280h so I may need to adjust like the previous post said. Did the break in at 2000 rpm for the 20 minutes have about 100 miles on it know. No loss of power noise ect. I will try to get a screen print of the data logger on the commander 950 tomorrow or over the weekend and post it.
