PROM: What do i need??
Hello..
I hope i am right here in this board..
The Problem:
We changed a "Federal Emission" L03 Engine to a "California Emission" L03.
No the PROM from the old engine does not work properly (Error 43).
So, we need a PROM for a "California Emission" Engine. I was looking on the
internet and found the "Hypertech Street Runner". I know, i won't get more
hp.. this is not important.. much more important for me:
Can i replace the stock prom with the hypertech prom to bring back my
car to running properly?
Thanks and best wishes from switzerland

Re: PROM: What do i need??
problem wouldn't be with the prom, the motors are identical, the "cali emissions motor" is actually the same motor you pulled from your car, the cali emissions part is in the bin file, your stock bin should work fine

Typing while the man with the club was typing....
Most likely (highly likely) there is no difference in the engines between a Cali car and a Federal car. The difference is in the calibration that affects emissions.
With this being an engine swap check that the knock sensor and fan switch wires didn't get switched.
On the L03 3rd gens, there are two causes for code 43: run away knock and a failed forced knock test. When the code & SES appears will tell you which one is setting the code.
Right away, and there is run away knock.
During a period of heavy throttle, then the forced knock test is failing.

Re: PROM: What do i need??
Hi all
So, why there are two different proms for my engine?
Federal: 8026ANTT or 1113AXKT (16161112)
California: 1108AXKS or 8022ANTS (16161107)
http://www.3rdgenformula.com/91/promcodes.htm
And also check this:
http://workshop-manuals.com/chevrole..._driveability/
And the Hypertech Street Runner Chip is also available in a 50 states and in a california only version..
http://www.summitracing.com/dom/parts/hyp-151321
This is the California Only Part
http://www.summitracing.com/dom/parts/hyp-121362/
And this for 50 states (w/o california)
And all the ignition parts was taken from the old engine.. we exchanged
only the block and the heads...and all parts was doublechecked (we have a donor car)

yes sir, i dont know why i thought 43 was egr,
Transamch, listen to whatever RBob has to say, he is the man when it comes to this stuff
California has "stricter" emissions laws versus most of the United states, so they got their own Prom ID with changes made to the bin file
this was suppose to help get the cars through the emissions tests in california

Re: PROM: What do i need??
ok. thank you! Now, my next problem... where i can get a Cali-PROM?
So i found it, i need the AXKS Prom.. but i can't find any of them in ebay and on other
platforms.. my last chance is to order a Hypertech chip.. i found a compatibel one.
will try this.. but, does anybody have any ideas where i can get an original Cali-PROM?

Re: PROM: What do i need??
Contact "Tuned Performance" here on the boards. He may or should be able to burn a PROM for you. If not then contact Brian at TBI chips. The BIN is available, just need someone that can burn a 2732 chip and has the carrier (holder) for it.

Re: PROM: What do i need??
I'm ready to bet money that all LO3 engines are identical, and the only minor difference is in the prom and eventually the catalytic converter.
If you bought a crate engine from rock auto I would suggest you take it appart and build it up to O.E. specs. If it is a crate engine from Marshall engines then I already feel sorry for you.

Re: PROM: What do i need??
its an engine from rockauto.. exactly this one:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...278&cc=1251740
so, you think my car would run with the Cali-PROM and also with the Federal-PROM?
Take a look at this.. exactly the describtet problem we have.

Re: PROM: What do i need??
http://workshop-manuals.com/chevrole..._driveability/ it says LB9 only.
And I know from experience that you can use either prom without the slightest difference in functionality.
You can stab a LT1 cam in it, add headers and plenty more without that code 43 issue you are experiencing.
Who is the manufacturer of that rebuilt engine?

Re: PROM: What do i need??
can't say that.. there is only "Famous Brand DC36" on Rockauto Shop..
and in the link, it says "LB9 Only" have to change the knock sensor.. all others
seems to have change the prom like in the list.. we have this error code 43 and
we replaced ALL of the related components.. we have also a donor car..

Re: PROM: What do i need??
In the cause it only mentions the LB9, but who knows maybe they installed some defective proms in the LO3 equipped vehicles at some time.
You could try switching the donor cars, ESC module, complete distributor, knock sensor and the whole ECM, all individually to narrow down the problem.
But first follow post #3 and report back, RBob will certainly know hot to narrow it down further, from there.
