New to DFI, have a question
New to DFI, have a question
Im building a 600 hp procharged 350 using a TPIS miniram, AFR 195cc heads 8.8:1 with 15psi boost. D1 sc with the 3core intercooler. And an Xtreme HR cam. Im going to use DFI for engine management but I dont know ANYTHING about engine management or how to read spark plugs or anything. Where is a book or something that I can read up on this stuff to get ready for the DFI, I dont want to blow up my $10k engine. Thanks guys.

My dfi came with a manual you should get one with yours also. Read it every thing you need to know about tuning it is in there every one is looking for a short cut by copying some one else program but the best way is to learn to tune it yourself it takes time but it is not rocket science

If you are unclear on how to do a full calibration from scratch then have it tuned by a pro that uses a wide band O2. If you don't, you may do some serious damage to the motor.

I've seen alot of suposedly pros, that were at best dealing with a deck of 51.
You need to start doing alot of reading, and maybe helping out some guys running a fast car to see what things should look like (ie plug reading).
The point of this room is to talk about programming...the answer shouldnt be...uh..go have somebody else do it...
Thats not what I asked.
Hopefully next summer I will be on with Atlanta Speed Shop and I can get some hands on experience. Georgia Tech doesn't really have any automotive or motorsports classes in their Mechanical Eng. program so Im kinda stuck right now just reading books. I wanted to know some general engine management material that I could pick up and start to teach myself. If anyone knows of any books I can get please let me know what they are called and the author so I can find them. Thanks!

GTA600 - The point I was trying to make is that time spent with someone who knows the programming can be invaluable. I had my initial calibration done by a local guy who taught me alot about DFI in the 2 hour period that he calibrated. His initial programming got me into the 11.90's. From there I was able to get another 2 tenths by playing with fuel and spark.
Sorry if I offended you with my reply!

There are several tech articles at http://www.diy-efi.org/ . You can also go to www.cruisinperformance.com and check out the DFI programming manual. Lots of good stuff in that one. I'm not familar with any books in particular. Perhaps a search at Barnes & Nobels or something.

Its my bad I misunderstood what you were saying. I get alot of people who turn their noses up at me because Im 20 and don't have much experience. My apologies.
Thanks for the links I'll check them out.
Does anyone know what all is NOT controlled by the DFI computer? I know that the Tranny Lockup requires an external controller. I have a 700r4 on my 1987. What about the speedometer or the cruise control? Are there aftermarket controllers for everything that the DFI doesn't control or do I need to get a piggy-back harness for it?

I think you will find what the DFI controls varies from system to system. You will need to enquire with the various DFI manufacturers to determine what they do and do not control.
Off the top of my head, this is what the stock GM ECM (SD TPI) controls:
1) TCC Lock-Up (automatic) or Shift Light (manual).
2) EGR Duty Cycle
3) Purge Cannister Duty Cycle
4) Air Divertor
5) Fan#1 on a dual fan car (not sure about a single fan car, this may be solely by the Fan Switch much as Fan#2 is on a Dual Fan Car)
6) A/C clutch engagement/disengagement
7) VATS
8) Injector Pulse Width
9) Ignition Timing
10) IAC position
There may be a couple of minor things that I have forgotten, but that is basically the "devices" that the Stock ECM controls on an SD TPI car. If the DFI is designed to be "emissions compliant", then the EGR and Purge Cannister would be controlled. But if the DFI is designed for "off-road use only", you may find a lot of the emissions equipment is not supported.

i dont know jack about DFI, but i know that your speedo is controled mechanically from a gear in your transs and that cruise control is operated by a vacume system, neither of them are DFI controled as far as i know.

I made up a little relay circuit that allows my Accel DFI to lock-up the TC. It's pretty simple.
Also, if you're doing the work on the GTA, the speedo is electric, but the ECM does not control it.

I have an Accel DFI unit in my car. Batch fire, the basic $800 harness/computer set up. I have a friend that knows quite a bit about the Speed Pro system, and he successfully campaigns a car in the EZ Street class. He knows fast cars, has a job in IT technology, and is overall sharp when it comes to these things. I'm more adept when it comes to mechanical stuff, engine combinations, gear ratios, etc. I'm hoping that between the two of us - we can get this thing to run right. The harness/computer I have, was bought from a guy that bought a complete SR kit - then he decided he no longer wanted the DFI computer and harness. So, I snagged it for $500 - brand new in the box. I have no such manual for programming clues & tips. I have an installation manual. But, that's it. I see a link in this thread for a manual, would that help me?

GTA I wrote out a big reply but for some reason it didnt show. Here is some links to get you a feel for my program and system.Go here and download the use manual to get a feel for the Theory behind the Tec 2s programs,it is much different than other aftermarket systems.
http://getfuelinjected.com/tec2.htm
Here is another link to the newest version of their software, download it to your desktop and install it and now you can atually see how the system will work.Alot of features.Go to the Tuning wizard and you can type in a engine and it will generate a startup program to get you started. At anytime you are unsure about a parameter hit F1 and it will explain it and some tuning hints too. Here it is:
http://getfuelinjected.com/WinTEC2/
Here is the site for the system so you can get anover view of it:
http://getfuelinjected.com/index.htm
In my opinin this is a very good system for the money, complete engine programming and crank triggered ignition in one.all the sensors come with the kit(except idle air and knock sensor)Comes with the crank trigger, and sensor. It is dead on acurate the timing. The throry behind the system is much different than other aftermarket system, just read the Tec 2 manual to get a grasp first and antyhing else let me know.
