Camaro 305HO TPI 1988 5speed

Hi there,
have a problem with my trusty Camaro, have been running beautifully since I bought it in 2011, but now it suddenly stops and when I crank it , it will not start again.

If I wait a couple of minutes it starts again and runs as normal for maybe 10 minutes or so, then stops.

So I tried to shortcut the diagnostiks connector to have the SES lamp to tell how it felt, but the SES does not blink at all, only constant light when ignition is on.

But, when the motor stops, the SES lamp does not even light up when ignition is turned on, and if waiting a couple of minutes I can start again, and by that time the SES lamp lights as normal when ignition is turned on.

Really frustrating , bcs, can not trust it as of now.

I am in Chicago area Thursday 14 to Saturday 16 in business, so if any tips of what part to buy it would be grateful. To buy them back home in Sweden is expensive.

Also tried to get hold of an ADLD cable for OBD-1 diagnostics, tried O´reillys Auto Parts, but they did not know what that cable was, where in Chicago area do you think that can be bought ?

Best Regards
Bo

It’s sounds like your ecm might be faulty. The service number for a tpi is 1227165.
You can buy a usb to aldl cable from moates.net. Most people use tuner pro rt. The mask is $32b. You can also use winaldl if you can’t get tunerpro rt to work. I have had issues with there ads files when converted to adx with the 86-88 tpi.

http://www.moates.net/aldu1-and-cabl....html?cPath=64

Your ecm needs to be put in a 10k mode that the moates box has a switch for.
This allows the start of dataflow. Once flipped and data starts flowing the switch can be turned off. Iirc timing locks and the idle will raise some as well as the check engine light on in the 10k mode.

Re: Camaro 305HO TPI 1988 5speed

Finally replaced the ecm after fixing bad connections in the 2pcs ecm multiconnectors.
Engine still stops suddenly but seems to be a pattern.
As long as it is cool weather it runs nicely,
But as soon as warm weather it is hopeless.
Today it stalled 8 times on the 10miles home from town. After waiting 2 to 3 minutes it runs again a bit.
One guy told me that there is a fuel injection water temp sensor that when it is broke gives this problem.
Anyone heard of it ?
Where is it placed ?
He said it is not the normal water temp sensor for the water temp gauge in the instrument panel.
Any ideas ?
Best regards

There are two sensors on the front of the intake . One for the cold start injector. The other for the ecm to tell it the engines coolant temperature. I don’t think that’s the stalling issue. When the engine dies you need to check for spark , injector pulse and fuel pressure.

Normally when it start it cold the engine runs perfectly until it get up into working temp, wich is a bit below the 220 on the temp gauge.
Then it can suddenly die, but as written below only if its a warm day, cold weather is normally not a problem.

When I try to crank it directly after it dies it does not start.
I have to turn off the ignition and wait for a couple of minutes, like if it needs to cool off kind of.
Then it starts and goes like normal.
If it is below 20 degrees celsius it is normally no problem at all, but above around 25 C or so it starts to stall like this.
Normally it just dies , sometimes it can still run but spitting and coughing a lot and if I try to give more gas it is very low respons, only more spitting etc...
and , again, if I turn off the ignition and stand still for a minute or two, the it runs again.
If it is a really warm day it takes longer time for it to "cool down" so that it starts again. If I try to crank it during the problem time it turns but not even a spit or small ignition appears.

Frustrating like hell, as you can imagine.

And here in my part of Sweden, we do not have any real V8 cunning folks at all...

Any more ideas after my full problem description above ?

Best //Bo
