Code 51 firebird 1992 3.1 L v6
Code 51 firebird 1992 3.1 L v6
Hi, I am a car mechanic from the Netherlands and am here on the forum for the first time
Well I just bought a firebird from 1992 a 3.1 L.
This car has stood still for 3 years and has been put away with a problem
The problem I am experiencing now is that the car idles well when it is cold and drives fine, only when the car gets warm it starts to run bad and it almost stops when you let go of the gas.
And what happened at one point is that it started to run high idle .
Then I read the codes and then it indicated 51, now I read everywhere that it is a computer problem .
But will the problem of that code 51 also be the cause of the bad running or is this because it may have stood still for a long time
So are they 2 separate problems?
Because I also read a lot about the injectors .
I hope someone can help me, thanks in advance

I think the chip the memcal in the ecm is ok. They rarely ever fail. But it is a possibility.
usually a ecm cures the issue.

It might not be running off the ecms calibration prom but in a limp home mode. You can pop out the blue memcal and try reseating. But it’s possibly a bad ecm. Even wrapping on the ecm case with a screw driver while running the engine to see if the engine running changes to verify a bad ecm.

Hit the ecm with car running to see if running changes. Just another test to see if the ecm is bad. May not show any difference though.

Yes disconnect the battery. Pull the Accel cover off the computer. Rock back the white and blue levers and pop out the blue memcal chip.
then reinsert the memcal and connect the battery.

hi, an update to this one. After resetting the ECM the engine was running neatly again, no fault light, I let the car idle for a long time and after a long time it started to run poorly again without a fault light. After a few taps on the ecm the car started to run well again and the check engine Light turnt on and right back off.And stil code 51
Does it seems to be the ecm ??

Umm just guessing that the ecm is bad. The memcal chip can go bad but it’s not as common of a failure piece.
i do have bolts if you need and I don’t know how much shipping would be for a 3 oz return item for you but might be worth havingbolth to fully diagnose.

hi an update on this one.
have replaced the ecu and for a cardone 777730
the car runs reasonably well and does not turn off .
I just don't get the car through the MOT .
because the co is too high at idle
have read it again and the ecm shows code 13, it may be because of me 02 Sensor Or not ??
