Bad Prom Malf Code 51/No Start Condition

Getting help chasing no start condition with multiple malf codes readings (Dynamic EFI EBL Flash II). Have suggestions that any one of these - alternator, battery cables, coil, ignition module could be the cause, thanks for those... All have checked out OK/In spec or replaced still no start. Cleared codes and none came back except 51 "Prom", BTW 51 was the only active code showing initially. Anyway, could "51" indicate a short? And at what point do I resign my self to it's a defective ECM Prom? Thanks.

Try different banks... Also try flashing to a different bank, did the BIN verify?

Like in "Try a different BIN" I did, the last one I used where it ran great. Different BIN and different bank no luck but thanks. Bank "verify" is checked and I get message "Bank Verify Starting" and "Flashing Successful".

So you have tried different banks, and BINs. And they flash in and are verified (read back) successfully.

Have you checked the other items I listed in your PM?

Try a different bank, more than one tune can be loaded you can run multiple tunes.

Yes. Checked battery cables connections = OK, the battery feels strong and no loss in battery current noted with ohm meter terminal to terminal vs terminal to engine block readings. I haven't tested the diodes in the alternator yet, car is not starting. Alternator seemed to be charging fine before the incident and the battery did not feel like it was drained after the car ran erratically over about a 5 mile limp home.

Had a capacitive discharge MSD 6 module hooked up and assumed that was my issue so I removed it and rewired the dizzy hook up. No luck there either. Then checked the spark because I was only getting an occasional slight pop on start attempts. Found a weak yellow spark. Starter and battery continued to feel strong. So, onward other troubleshooting - getting 12.4 volts to dizzy with ignition on, 9.9 when turning it over. Replaced the ignition module. Also checked the coil resistance, primary was a tenth below spec but that would actually increase voltage/spark, secondary was well within spec. Have not checked connections to ECM yet maybe later today. Haven't seen much in my research that relates a weak spark to an ECM issue but at a loss as to what else it could be also because I'm getting that Malf Code 51. BTW TB's are working.

Does this mean that they are spraying fuel while cranking?

> Found a weak yellow spark.

If this isn't corrected it may be an issue. Need to have a good decent spark. Note that during cranking that the distributor sparks at the base setting. The ECM is out of the picture. Although the ECM does require reference pulses from the distributor in order to pulse the injectors.

Is this EBL ECM the one you purchased back in 2011? If so have you updated the firmware in it?

RBob.

Yes TBI's spraying fuel while cranking both pulsating.

I put the MSD module back on and am getting a better spark and more pops but it's still not starting. Pulled the injector connectors off and cranked just to see if it run would a bit (eliminate possible flooding) but same results.

Sounds like the ECM has no influence on the spark and timing during cranking. Maybe it's the coil even though it tested OK. Also I replaced a DUI ignition module with an inexpensive Master Pro - read I could do that. IDK it's getting frustrating. Should probably buy a new DUI coil and ignition module certainly less than a new EBL Flash. Also I'd have to repin or transfer ham board, yuk. Not fun stuff.

Could it be the knock spark control module? Or is that also out of the picture during cranking?

Not getting Malf code 51 anymore, BTW.

It is the 2011 buy a I do not recall giving it any firmware update.

New DUI coil, cap, rotor, and ignition module from Summit did the trick... had it in two days - fast. So, lessons learned??? Don't trust cheap chit ignition modules OR coils that test within spec. Ha. Nothing like the shotgun approach to fixing things - at least I saved shop fees!
