89 Chip in 87?

Can a chip for an 89 Formula be used in an 87 Z28? Both are 350's, the only real difference I can see is the 87 has the cold start valve an no VATS. Is this feasible?

Yes, it will work if you remove the VATS flag and disconnect the cold start valve and you should be fine.

But if you're going to make your own chip from scratch, you'd probably be better off using the ARAP code as a starting point....

(You probably have to modify the spark table as it is a bit too aggresive if you decide to use ARAP, but otherwise it's a good starting point!).

ZaphodB, Thanks for the response. I planned on starting with the ARAP, but it's not too clear in the FAQ about using it on the 87-88 cars. I just wanted to be sure burning the ARAP with the VATS disabled would work in the 87, as the programs are different. So basically just unplug the cold start and remove VATS the chip should run?

Thanks again.

Yes, thats correct. I'd advise you to use Craigs ecm scanning software and log a few WOT runs and see which parts of the spark tables you need to decrease spark advance in, because the stock ARAP tables *will* take you into detonation in higher rpm ranges, at least it did when I did my chip...

But take your time and do it right and you'll end up with a chip better than any off-the-shelf chip you can buy. I've done my own as well as helped a few friends....

(I have tons of empty proms and consider this to be a hobby of mine - Thus I have no commercial interest in this, just do it for fun!!!).
