Newbie: Chip Programming questions
Newbie: Chip Programming questions
HI,
Please excuse the length of this post....
I'm new to this board and while I've found a lot of the chip information interresting - it's been very confusing. I don't program the chip myself as I don't have the setup, however I have a friend that does and he's been doing the programming for me. He has a 89 Corvette and is familiar with it's requirements and has used some of that knowledge for my chip, but it isn't working quite right. We aren't pulling any codes but the car just isn't performing like it used to (went from 13.36 1/4 last year to 13.63 this year)
First let me list my car's specifics:
1991 Z28 5.7
Mods:
(done 2001)
LPE 211/219 roller cam
Roller tip rockers
(new springs with screw in studs)
Original heads have been "Pocket ported" and "port matched" to the headers and intake.
Intake, runners, upper plenum have been ported
Headers (small diam)
160 deg thermo
Dynomax muffler
Under drive pulleys
K&N filter
MSD "blaster" coil
Nitto Drag radials
2002 mods
24lb injectors
adjustable fuel pres reg.
water pump
Rebuilt tranny w/ corvette servo kit
Yank 2,800 3.0 STR Torque Converter
That's it for now - but of course there will be more.
The guys were trying to tell me how the programming works, explain BLMs, fuel mixtures etc and I understand some of it but not enough to do my own tuning.
When my car kept getting slower (went from 13.88- 14.00 same 1.8 60 foot times) I reset the computer - against their advice and it went to 13.68. They reprogrammed the chip, ran some tests to make sure there were no codes and timing was ok. Last Friday at the races I turned 13.88, 13.91 (on the 1.8 60s). Again, I reset the computer and it went down to 13.63 with the same 1.8 60s.... According to another friend who has a 4th gen and does all his programming at the track (via laptop) - my car doesn't like their fuel table settings and it is running too rich. He suggested we go back to the stock 91 Z28 program and just adjust for timing, injector size, lower thermostat, and fan settings.
Currently he is usikng the program from his 89 5.7 vette and modified the timing and a couple other settings for use in my car.
I saw another post that had the program for a 91 vette - 5.7 auto... while the "spark tables" would have to be replaced - would the rest work for my car?
I was at 13.36 last year and should be knocking on the door of those elusive 12's but instead I'm getting slower... any suggestions on what I should tell them to do? Is there information somewhere that says what the fuel tables for my car should be, what it's "ideal" fuel mixture should be (fuel settings seem to be the biggest issue at the moment)...
thanks,

tell him to start it out with the aujp bin. then make changes acordingly, but not to refrence off his arap. start with the stocker and slowly move your way forward, based on what your car likes, not what his likes.

Unless he's converted to SD, there is NO WAY on earth that he could be using a 1989 Vette BIN on a 1991 F-body car...something is wrong and you haven't given us all the details (or you are not aware of them).
Even if it was from an SD Vette, there are issues in using the Vette SD bin (oil temp sensor for one).
As the others said, start with the stock F-body SD BIN (AUJP) and tune it for YOUR CAR! MANY, MANY, MANY times we tell people DO NOT start with someone elses "modified" bin because the BIN is setup for THEIR car...NOT YOURS.
And be prepared to learn how to tune on your own if you want max performance.
