Can I use this stuff?

I have a 1227730 ECM. Can I use Win ALDL for this. It says it is for a 160 baud rate but this ECM is 8192? And i'm gonna get stuff to burn my chips. Pocket programmer, 29C256 EEPROM, WinBin and the cable. Do I need a memcal i'm not even sure what it is. I know the ECM has in it right now a stock chip with the hypertech chip adapter. Thanks. And is there anything else I need that i'm missing to get into burning. Thanks again.

You need Craig Moates' software (www.moates.net) to read the 7730 ECM, and a data cable (2 Transistor is easiest, and works just fine). After than, you're on your own I'm just getting into this stuff as well, and I sense that you are about at the same stage I was in when I first started looking at all this PROM buring info:

You do not need a transistor cable for craigs software.

Well, what do you use then? The 2-Transistor cable is by far the easiest cable to make. The Max 232 cable requires the mounting of a chip and quite a few more components than the 2-transistor cable. You can get all the parts for the 2-Transistor cable at Radioshack (no waiting for your "sample" to come in from Maxim electronics).

Parts list for 2 transistor cable:
2 NPN Transistors (2N2222A)
10k Ohm Resistors (3)
1 1N4148 Diode
1 Female DB9 connector
1 DB9 Connector Hood (to cover the connector)
3 colors of wire ( I use Red(+), Black(-), and Yellow(Data) )

All those parts will cost under 10 bucks at Radioshack

Wire em up like this:

Also, disregard the ALDL connector displayed on the image above.
Your connector will (most likely) look like this:
Code:
FEDCBA
G

For your car, you need to plug the Ground wire into pin A, data wire into pin E, and run the 12 volt line to your cig. lighter or some other 12 volt source).

I am sorry I may stand corrected, I was under assumption that you did Not need the 10k resistor for the 7730 ecm as you do the 165.

You dont need the 10k resistor for the 7730 ECM (as far I know). A 10k resistor is used for 165 ECM's between pins A&B to put the ECM into ALDL mode. You do, however, need 10k resistors to build the circuit that allows you to use ALDL mode
